2023.05.27 22:56 PlayingWithTc99m Getting a family of 8 to Galveston

Hi! Any suggestions on getting a large family to Royal Caribbean’s port in Galveston? Would like to rent a passenger van but it looks very limited on rentals. Flying in half the family would be fine but then they have to Uber to the port I guess? Any one done this before? Two adults what can drive, rest are young teens are very elderly people who can’t drive. It’s a 5 day cruise so figure on a bag maybe two each. We are in the Dallas Texas area.

2023.05.27 20:18 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 90. Indiana

Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings
Hoosier Daddy? Indiana finally comes in at 90 after weeks of clamoring from their fans. The Hoosiers don’t have a lot of historical success, with just 2 AP top 10 finishes since 1936, when the poll originated. What they do have, is a loyal and passionate fanbase. I can’t imagine they’ll continue to struggle forever, as each of their last 3 coaches have gotten them to a bowl game, and they have a strong alumni base. Still, they come in as the 4th worst Power 5 team on this list and the last placed team in the Big Ten.

Woof. The only reason Indiana’s this high is because of strength of schedule being a Power 5 team. Other than that it’s been rough, with no top 20 finishes in 40 years according to the JB Rankings. One thing Indiana’s been underrated at? Producing a few extremely good RBs. All 4 of their consensus All-Americans are shared between 3 RBs (Anthony Thompson 1988 and ‘89, Vaughn Dunbar 1991, Tevin Coleman 2014). Tevin Coleman ran for 2036 yards and 15 TD on 7.5 YPC, finishing 7th in Heisman voting in 2014 for just a 4-8 team. Notable NFL players include Coleman, QB Trent Green, OL Roger Saffold, WR Antwaan Randle El, and CB Tracy Porter.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 1984 (0-11 overall, 0-9 Big Ten)
1984 Indiana wouldn’t have even been the best team in their state if they went down a level—Indiana State was ranked atop the Division 1-AA polls for most of the year after a 9-0 start. Still, the theme of the season for the 1984 Hoosiers was “growing pains”. Led by first year head coach Bill Mallory, Mallory would go on to become the school’s winningest coach with a record of 69-77-3 from 1984-96, making 6 bowls and appearing in the AP Top 25 in 6 separate years. So for the 1984 season, it was about laying the foundation to break a losing culture that had lasted over 3 decades. After starting the season losing 24-31 to (eventual) 2-9 Duke and 14-48 to Kentucky, Indiana slowly improved throughout the year, losing 6 Big Ten games by one possession. QB Steve Bradley threw for 2544 yards 10 TD 20 INT, but somehow was drafted in the 12th round of the 1986 NFL Draft despite never posting a single season with more TDs than INTs. OT Kevin Allen was by far the most talented player on the team, picked with the 9th overall selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1985 NFL Draft, but would go on to be a collasal bust and despised in Philly. Allen was ranked as the 4th worst player in NFL history by Deadspin in 2011.
5. 1991 (7-4-1 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
We’ll see 4 seasons from coach Mallory in this top 5. After a great 1987 and ‘88, Indiana had fallen back into their old ways in ‘89-90, going 11-11-1 and 6-9-1 in the Big Ten. Mallory brought Indiana back to the Big Ten’s top 4 in 1991, mostly thanks to the consensus All-American season by RB Vaughn Dunbar, but also because of the emergence of QB Trent Green. Dunbar finished 6th in Heisman voting, amassing 2068 yards and 12 TD from scrimmage. He set the school record for rushing yards with 1805, unbroken until Tevin Coleman in 2014. Green led the Big Ten in TDs with 25, completing 59% of passes for 2627 yards and 12 TD 14 INT, while rushing for 202 yards and 13 TD. Indiana mostly beat up on teams that finished with losing records (but are known today as solid programs) like Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. One possession losses to #4 Michigan and #19 Ohio State showed they could compete with the big boys too. The season came down to 5-4-1 Indiana vs 4-6 Purdue for the Old Oaken Bucket and a bowl appearance for Indiana. Purdue lined up for the winning 36 yard FG with 30 seconds left…and sailed it wide right. Indiana took the Bucket, made the Copper Bowl, and trounced Baylor 24-0 to finish 7-4-1 and 32nd in my rankings.
4. 1993 (8-4 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
This was the last great Mallory-coached team, and the last Indiana team to make a bowl game until 2007. The run game was much weaker than usual, but this was easily the best defense in the Mallory era, giving up just 16.4 PPG with 9 players that played in the NFL. Indiana jumped out to a 5-1 start, giving up just 12.3 PPG, then shut out Northwestern 24-0 and #22 Michigan State 10-0. Indiana was ranked #17, at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, and had one of the best defenses in the country giving up just 9.3 PPG. A pivotal game against #19 Penn State was one of the biggest “prove it” games in recent memory for Indiana, and they nearly delivered, losing just 31-38. Indiana would also put up a great fight against #5 Ohio State, losing 17-24, before finishing 8-3 with a win over Purdue for the 5th time in 7 years. #21 Indiana lost 20-45 to #22 Virginia Tech in the Independence Bowl to finish the year 8-4, 4th place in the Big Ten, and #27 in my rankings.
3. 1987 (8-4 overall, 6-2 Big Ten)
This Indiana team was subtly stacked. This was Mallory’s 4th year as head coach, going from 0-11 to 4-7 to 6-6 the previous 3 years. 1987 was when they put the Big Ten on notice for the first time, and was in serious contention for the Big Ten title. After starting 3-1, Indiana headed to #9 Ohio State, who was coming off 8 straight years of AP top 15 finishes. The game wasn’t close—and not for the team you think. Indiana held Ohio State to just 10 rushing yards in the 2nd half of a 31-10 win, which Buckeyes coach Earle Bruce called “The darkest day in Ohio State football since I have been associated with it,” dating back to 1979. After a win over Minnesota, #15 Indiana hosted #20 Michigan in front of a nearly sold out crowd of 51,000, and caused delays on Michigan’s drives in the 2nd quarter because of crowd noise. The Indiana defense dominated yet again, winning 14-10, and this was the last time Indiana would beat Michigan until 2020.
The Big Ten was suddenly an unexpected 2-horse race between Indiana and Michigan State. #11 Indiana, their highest ranking in 18 years, made the trek to Kinnick Stadium, where dreams go to die, and Iowa beat the Hoosiers 29-21. Following up with a win over Illinois—Indiana controlled their destiny: Beat Michigan State and Purdue, and you’re Big Ten champions. Playing on national TV, #13 Michigan State dominated #16 Indiana 27-3, and the Spartans won the conference title. Purdue kicked the (old oaken) bucket in the rivalry game, and Indiana rolled to a 35-14 win and a 3rd place finish in the B1G. A close loss to Tennessee in the bowl and they finished 8-4.
The team was subtly stacked as I mentioned. RB Anthony Thompson ran for 1000+ yards and would go on to become a 2x consensus All-American. WR Ernie Jones caught 66 passes for 1265 yards and 13 TD, and was the Big Ten co-Player of the Year and a 1st Team All-American. OT Eric Moore was 2nd Team All-Big Ten and a top 10 NFL Draft pick in 1988. LB Van Waiters was 3rd Team All-American. Coach Mallory won Big Ten Coach of the Year. This has a real claim as the “best” Indiana team due to the wins over Ohio State/Michigan.
2. 2020 (6-2 overall, 6-1 Big Ten)
One of the darlings of 2020. The Penix → Fryfogle connection took the Big Ten by storm first in name, then in production. Indiana was coming off an 8-5 year in which they nearly missed out on 9WINDIANA status, and brought momentum into 2020. It seemed like everyone else overlooked them, though. The turning point in the season came immediately—week 1 against #8 Penn State. Down 35-28 in OT, Indiana scored on a 9 yard TD and elected to go for 2. Going for the left corner, Penix DIVED from the 5 yard line, reaching for the pylon…GOT IT! INDIANA WINS 36-35! 2 weeks later they’d beat #23 Michigan 38-21, their first win against the Wolverines since 1987. 1 week later Indiana would beat Michigan State 24-0 thanks to a standout defensive effort and a breakout 200 yard receiving performance from WR Ty Fryfogle.
That set up #9 Indiana at #3 Ohio State, the top 10 matchup we all saw coming. And boy, Indiana came to PLAY. Ohio State narrowly escaped with a 42-35 win, with Justin Fields throwing 3 INTs and Fryfogle going for 7 catches, 218 yards, and 3 TD. This Indiana team was legitimately a really good team, and they even beat #16 Wisconsin 14-6 to finish off the regular season. They’d lose the Outback Bowl in an upset to 4-5 Ole Miss, but finished #12 in the AP Poll, the highest in over 50 years. Penix finished 2nd Team All-Big Ten with 1645 passing yards 14 TD 4 INT. Fryfogle won the Big Ten WR of the Year, catching 37 balls for 721 yards and 7 TD. A whopping 4 defensive players finished 1st Team All-Big Ten, with the entire secondary making the 1st-3rd Team. Even special teams had no weaknesses, with kicker Charles Campbell going 10/11 on FGs. Penix has since transferred to Washington and continues to live up to his potential, finishing 8th in Heisman voting in 2022.
1. 1988 (8-3-1 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
2020 was good…but 1988 was dominant. They opened with 41-14 and 35-16 wins over Rice and Kentucky. After tying Missouri and blowing out Northwestern, Indiana hosted Ohio State a year after the “darkest day” in Ohio State history. This was arguably worse. Indiana scored on 4 of their first 5 possessions, held a 28-0 lead at halftime, and big brother’d the Buckeyes 41-7. An unthinkable result today. Fast forward a few weeks later, 5-2 Indiana hosted 4-2-2 (their record, not a soccer formation) Iowa. Iowa QB Chuck Hartlieb would set the single game school record with an insane 558 passing yards, and Indiana RB Anthony Thompson broke a school record with 47 carries. Indiana won 45-34, after Iowa nearly came back from a 35-3 deficit. In the last week of the regular season, Indiana blew out Purdue 52-7 on their home turf, in one of the greatest performances in the rivalry’s history. Even the bowl game was a wipe, beating 8-3 South Carolina 34-10.
Indiana scored 33.0 PPG while giving up just 19.6 PPG. 7 wins were by 20+ points, and 4 by 30+. QB Dave Schnell, former 1985 high school player of the year, was 2nd Team All-Big Ten, leading the conference in yards per attempt. RB Anthony Thompson won his 1st of 2 Big Ten POTYs, rushing for 1686 yards and 26(!) TD on 4.7 YPC. 9 players total were 1st/2nd Team All-Big Ten. Kicker Pete Stoyanovich was 1st Team All-B1G, and went on to be Dan Marino’s kicker on the Miami Dolphins for 7 years from 1989-95. He also served as a kicking double in Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994).

5th Quarter

Will Indiana ever surpass Purdue as a football program? Why hasn’t Indiana been as good in football as they’ve been in basketball? Did Penix score that 2 point conversion against Penn State in 2020? Who was really the best Indiana squad between 2020 and the 1980’s teams? And where do you think Indiana stands as a program going forward?

#2t UCLA 87, #6 Michigan State 64. Can anyone beat the Bruins? Teams are going to line up and take their shots now.
Kiki Vandeweghe took his turn to step up with 22 points as the Bruins (9-0) sealed their spot atop the Top 25 by routing the Spartans (7-2) before a stunned crowd expecting a heavyweight fight.
"We know if we're all playing well, we'll win," Vandeweghe said after the game. "I'm not the guy, I know I'm the fifth guy in the [starting] lineup, but I gotta do what I'm called on to do. Today, they had guys all over the bigs, they had Magic [Johnson] on [Reggie] Miller, and that left me."
Michigan State kept it close early and was only down 43-35 at the half. However, UCLA switched to a 2-3 zone to stymie the outside shooting of Magic Johnson (11 points) and Jason Richardson (10 points). Attempts to drive also failed, as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar converted for 7 blocks.
#2t North Carolina 105, #22 Alabama 58. When UCLA beat Kentucky earlier, the controversy of the Bruins-Heels game meant #1 could be considered up for grabs. Here's Carolina's rather convincing argument.
Vince Carter went for 33 points and Michael Jordan recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists as the Tar Heels (8-1) mugged the Crimson Tide (7-2) before a delirious home crowd.
"Everyone did their job," coach Dean Smith said after the game. "You saw Vince make the big shots, Michael did everything on the court today, we played solid defense, and you saw the result. When we get momentum going, it can be hard to stop, and that's what I'm hoping for."
It became clear from the opening tip that Alabama was in over their head. Bob McAdoo blocked a Latrell Sprewell layup on the opening play. Jordan picked up the loose ball and threw a half-court alley-oop pass to Carter, who slammed it home to set off a raucous ovation. From there, North Carolina never looked back.
"We couldn't do anything right tonight," Alabama coach Wimp Sanderson admitted. "We have to get better."
#7 Syracuse 81, #13 Illinois 69. Maybe the ACC will be more than a two-horse race this season; meanwhile, maybe the Big Ten West is still behind the East in competition if their top team struggles.
Derrick Coleman's 19 points lead the way as Illinois was held to 3-18 from long range by a tough zone defense as the Orange (8-1) took out the Illini (7-2) to make a statement of intent to be a part of the ACC Title race.
"We're tired of hearing about Duke and [North] Carolina," Coleman said after the game. "We joined the ACC to make the best conference in the country and we're going to show that right now. We are the reason it's the best."
Coleman took over in a key stretch in the second half. A three-point play after challenging Eddie Johnson, followed by a dunk spurred by a Rony Seikaly block, lifted the Orange from only up 5 to up 10. Illinois could not get closer than 7 for the rest of the game.
Meyers Leonard led Illinois with 15 points.
#1 Kentucky 102, #16 Louisville 61. The two rivals took the court anticipating a knock-down, drag-out affair. It turned almost instantly into a laugher.
Cliff Hagan had 15 points and all nine Kentucky players who played scored at least 8 points as the Wildcats (8-1) dominated the Cardinals (7-2) in a game with a surprisingly short bench from Kentucky.
"When we have to shorten our bench, we can do it," coach Adolph Rupp said after the game. "I wanted to simulate what we might see in the [NCAA] Tournament. The scoreboard wasn't what mattered; our performance is what mattered. The boys came through today."
The list of scoring was impressive. Cliff Hagan had 15; Devin Booker had 14; Louie Dampier had 13; Dan Issel and Antoine Walker had 12; Anthony Davis had 10; John Wall and Jamal Mashburn had 9; and Rex Chapman had 8. Everyone in Kentucky's starting five outscored everyone on Louisville's squad -- Pervis Ellison led the Cardinals with a mere 11.
"This week's been a wake-up call for us. Let's do better," Cardinals coach Denny Crum said.
#8 Michigan 86, #18 Notre Dame 63. Chants of We Want Kansas could be heard from the visiting Michigan faithful during the game. They just might get them if the team continues performing.
Glen Rice had 20 points, Chris Webber had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and in a matchup of football superpowers on the hardcourt, the Wolverines (8-1) took care of business against the Fighting Irish (7-2).
"Oh yeah, we would love to face Kansas," Rice said with a smile after the game. "You get to be the best by facing the best. That's our goal."
Bill Laimbeer led the Irish with 16 points, but the outside shooters for were shut down by defense from Jalen Rose and Jamal Crawford. Austin Carr in particular finished with 6 points on 2-15 shooting.
"We need our scorers to come through," Notre Dame coach Digger Phelps noted.
#5 Kansas 82, #15 Southern Cal 67. Southern Cal recovered quickly from their opening day loss to Kentucky. Unfortunately, they still seem a step behind their cross-town brethren if this game is anything to go by.
Joel Embiid, Wilt Chamberlain, and Paul Pierce each had 16 points as the Jayhawks (8-1) eased past the Trojans (7-2) and looked to solidify their spot in the Top 5.
"We feel like we can be a top seed," Chamberlain said to reporters in the post-game press conference. "We know there's competition, we know people are looking past us, but we feel we can compete with anyone at any time."
Gus Williams was held to 5 points by an incredible defensive effort from JoJo White, though he did make up for it partially with 9 assists, including four to USC's leading scorer on the night DeMar DeRozan (15 points).
#12 Indiana 82, #25 Arizona State 69. There was a bit of concern that Arizona State was a paper tiger, one that wouldn't survive the Pac-12 schedule to make the NIBL Tournament. While a win would silence the critics, this was a fair showing.
It still wasn't enough to get over the top.
Isiah Thomas had 19 points and 11 assists to lead his team in both categories as the Hoosiers (7-2) took out the Sun Devils (6-3) to bounce back and reclaim their winning ways.
"I think we showed what we can do out there," Hoosier coach Bobby Knight told reporters. "We have a top team, and we know we can dominate in the Big Ten and in the tournament. Isiah had a great game, the twins [Rick and Tom Van Arsdale] played well, and I think we can outplay and outcoach anyone when we have to."
Joe Caldwell had 16 points to pace the Sun Devils.
Arkansas 100, #19 Houston 85. Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson loves to play a full-court defense that he dubs "Forty Minutes of Hell". It tends to lead to more possessions for each team, and if the opponents aren't prepared for it, it can lead to trouble.
Tonight, it paid off.
Joe Johnson had 22 points, Sidney Moncreif had 18 and 6 steals, and the Razorbacks (7-2) stunned the Cougars (6-3) in a high-octane game that took Houston's best weapon -- interior offense -- almost completely out of the equation.
"If you don't let them get set up, you don't let their bigs go to work," Richardson explained to the press. "We knew their two big guys, [Elvin] Hayes and [Hakeem] Olajuwon, they like to get set up and aren't used to running. It was our best chance to pull something off."
While the concept didn't always pay off -- Olajuwon recovered to get 14 points and 5 blocks -- it did upset the natural order for Houston. Outside shooters had to step up, and guards had to make quick passes. Clyde Drexler did his part, leading the team with 18 points, but Damon Jones turned the ball over 7 times to the press.
"This loss is on me," Jones said.

PART EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX
[Previous Chapter] [The Beginning] [Patreon+2]
Thursday
Constantine Julius pushed his oversized laundry cart through the pristine white halls, the flat soles of his sneakers barely making a sound and certainly, not one that could be heard over the squeak of the mop bucket being pushed behind him. His cleaner’s outfit was one size larger than he would’ve liked, but it was necessary to avoid having any unwanted attention drawn to himself.
As it was, he still had his shoulder-length powder-blond hair folded up under a scruffy caramel-brown wig and wore modified Coke-bottle glasses that made his eyes appear bigger than they were. The latter was so that when people needed to describe him, the first thing that came to mind was the dark brown contact lenses he wore.
“Glen and Maxine,” Haynes’ voice murmured, deep inside his ear canal as he approached the nurse’s station. “Glen is divorced and fighting for custody of his twin girls, and Maxine is looking forward to her retirement party next month.”
Without acknowledging the information, Constantine gave the pair a friendly smile. Not over friendly, as that would reveal the pads he’d poked into his cheeks to change the contours of his face, but friendly enough to convey his connection to these people.
“Glen. Maxine,” he said, nodding as he pushed the cart ahead of him.
Both straightened. “Who are you?” they demanded as the janitor with the mop bucket went around and continued on down the hall.
“Victor Elright,” Constantine answered, leaning on the rail of his cart. “Are you any closer to getting custody of those girls of yours?”
If anything, the guard’s eyes narrowed, and he began typing on a keyboard behind the desk.
Constantine faux-frowned and looked at the older nurse with greying hair. “Did it not go well?”
“How do you know about Glen’s kids?”
“Johnny J is his best friend,” Haynes filled in.
“Johnny J and my sister run in the same circles. I haven’t spoken to either of them in a couple of weeks, but he talks a lot about how bullshit it is that she’s keeping them from him.”
“Yeah, it is,” the nurse agreed, relaxing, especially when the guard also seemed to relax.
“You normally do the south wing,” he said, though it was only mildly accusatory.
“Yeah. Ella asked me to cover for her tonight since it’s my night off. Her son’s not feeling well, but officially she’s the one not feeling well … if you get my drift.” Constantine gave him the side-eye, for most sick leave didn’t allow for children who needed to be cared for.
The story was one they’d prefabricated before coming in, having intercepted Ella a block from her home.
“Yeah, a lot of that kidfluenza is going around these days, isn’t it, Glen?” the nurse smirked, looking up at the security guard, whose lips twisted to one side as he looked pointedly at the ceiling.
Constantine chuckled. “So, am I good to go?”
“Do you know what you’re doing?” Glen asked, more procedural than any real desire to know.
“Pretty sure they don’t make the beds any differently over this side of the hospital,” he smirked, then looked at the nurse. “Oh, and if I don’t see you before next month, have fun spending all that define-contribution money. You’ve got a lot of people envious right now.”
“I’ll bet,” Maxine chuckled.
“Nice twist, using sick kids to connect to the single dad,” Haynes voiced through his earpiece.
“Mmmn,” Constantine hummed, though inwardly, it was a no-brainer. Schmoozing was his forte. That, shooting impossible targets and spending money. It was what he brought to the table, and he was very good at all three.
He pushed his cart down the corridor, stopping at every second room and going in to change the towels. His target room was at the far end, nine rooms down from the nurse’s station. But what had him inwardly frowning was the fact that the Master-At-Arms that had only just been assigned to the room that afternoon was noticeably absent and had been for the better part of an hour, for reasons Haynes couldn’t identify. He really didn’t enjoy the trepidation that crept across his skin, but this was going to be their only opportunity, so they had to take it.
After a minute or two, Constantine unlocked the room’s second door from the roof and the floor, pushed it open wide, and dragged his cart inside. He already knew the janitor was in the room before he entered, and as soon he was through, he pulled the curtain around the door partially closed and removed a Sig Sauer P220 Legion complete with an Obsidian 45 silencer from between the folds of the towels.
He hoped he wouldn’t have to use the weapon, but he hadn’t made it this far by leaving witnesses. So far, the guard and the nurse were still at the station at the other end of the hall.
“Talk when we get him out of here, Noah,” he hissed, for the boss was too busy telling their target what he was going to do to him, if the vindictively evil glint in the older man’s eyes was anything to go by. “He had guards on him an hour ago, and now they’re gone? I don’t like this. It reeks of a trap …”
Noah didn’t look up. “Why would they leave him for bait? No one knows about him, according to Haynes. Right?”
The latter question wasn’t meant for him, so Constantine didn’t answer.
“From what I’ve been able to ascertain,” the tech guru of their team agreed in their ears. “But when have you ever known Julius’ on-site instincts to let us down?”
That had the assassin smiling on the inside.
Noah Lancaster straightened away from the bed. “Bear?”
“Three minutes from the loading dock.”
“Are those dock cameras looped?”
“Affirmative,” Haynes drawled, for he knew better than to doubt her. This whole thing was making the boss-man crazy, not that Constantine could blame him. “I had a harder time hacking my high school system to give myself six weeks’ winter vacation back when I was fourteen.”
“What’d you do that for?” Bear asked.
“We had an exchange student from down under who said their annual break ran from mid-December to the end of January, making everything from Christmas Eve to Chinese New Year’s one big party. I decided to give it a try.”
“Did you get away with it?”
“Duh. I got perfect A’s that season.”
Constantine only half listened to the banter. If Haynes was breaking out the history books, she really was having an easy time of it. Anything remotely difficult had her fully focused on her screens.
“Julius,” Noah whispered sharply, bringing Constantine’s head up. The boss man had Portsmith’s sheets shoved to the bottom of the bed and the boy twisted to sit on the side of his bed with a fist curled into the fabric of his pyjama shirt to hold him upright. Having weight on that shattered leg with all those pins sticking out of it must have been agony, but just as Haynes had said, the bastard showed nothing in his face. It was like he’d checked out.
For his sake, he’d better hope he can stay there. Then again, fuck him. We’ll figure out a way to dig him back out. He felt that way, not only for Noah and his family’s pain, but the sheer audacity of this little bastard being able to elude them for three freakin’ years! “Keep an eye on the hallway for us,” Constantine murmured to Haynes as he pushed the cart right over to his boss. He flipped open the two lids of dirty laundry, revealing one large, reinforced bag where there should have been two.
“It’s a good thing he’s so unresponsive,” Noah sneered, dropping Portsmith’s feet into the bag and lifting his knees to fold him in half while Constantine eased Portsmith’s shoulders downwards and tossed his arms over the top of his head almost in an afterthought. Portsmith’s head was rolled forward and pressed into his knees, and towels were then wedged down the sides to keep the metallic points of his leg and shoulder pins from poking through a bag that was only supposed to have dirty laundry inside.
Constantine could understand Noah’s desire for revenge, but in his mind, this was stupid. The man was a vegetable. They were risking everything to get even with a man who couldn’t even scream. According to Haynes’s digging, he was still inside that broken body, just trapped. A waking coma patient. Noah had been adamant that just knowing Portsmith would feel everything coming his way would be enough for him.
“Don’t worry,” the boss man purred once Portsmith was situated. “Your parents will find what I leave of you … in about three years.” Noah’s voice was so filled with righteous venom that even Constantine, a veteran assassin who’d be known the world over if his true body count ever came to light, shuddered.

Two minutes later, having pushed the cart past the nurse’s station with a friendly wave of goodnight and entered the elevator, Constantine pushed the cart through the halls and out onto the loading dock. Noah joined him shortly afterwards, having stayed behind to prep the pillows to make it appear like Portsmith was sleeping behind a partially drawn curtain.
Bear was already out of the van, helping Constantine load the entire cart into the back. Ghost had melted into the shadows and was no doubt watching their backs for anyone Haynes missed.
The extraction went exactly as planned, with one exception. Once Bear had them back on the road and he and Noah had stripped out of their disguises and dumped them in a trash bag to be burned later (including the remnants of the spray-on gloves that were peeled off), a noise came from Portsmith’s laundry bag. It was low, and it was muffled, but it slowly grew in volume, causing everyone in the van to look at each other in shock.
The noise turned into words as liquid seeped through the bottom of the heavy-duty laundry bag and slid across the floorboards towards the back doors.
“Motherfuckers! I swear I’ll have every fucking last one of you…!” the man of the hour swore, wriggling despite the immense pain he had to be in.
Opening the lids just a bit, Constantine could see Portsmith struggling to escape the bag.
Without saying a word, Ghost drew a knife, reversed it in his fingers and slammed the hilt into the spot that wriggled the hardest, causing the mass to scream. “Shut up or bleed,” Ghost rasped, pushing the hilt of the knife against his broken voice box to speak in that gravelly whisper of his.
Alex stared up at them wide-eyed, then swallowed and whimpered in a blend of fear and agony. Ghost’s growl as he dropped the lid closed spoke volumes.
Well, well, well. The living dead chose this moment to rejoin the living? How … wonderful.
And if the evil chuckle of sheer delight that reverberated through Noah Lancaster’s throat from the front passenger seat of the van was anything to go by, the boss man couldn’t be happier.
* * *
As the van drove down N 12 Avenue on its way to the airport, liquid dripped from the bumper to land on the asphalt between the wheels. A few seconds later, the mass then lifted off the ground, curled in the air as if forming a rainbow, and vanished before touching the ground again.

2023.05.27 04:09 sesamesticks Trip Summary: 7 days in Costa Rica (Tamarindo, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Liberia)

Got back from a 1 week trip to Costa Rica and wanted to summarize my thoughts here as a few friends have asked for them.
Tamarindo, 2 nights
Scene: Young and touristy with a lot of surfing though during low tide you'll actually see that the beach is full of jagged rocks - my friend actually cut himself on them. Plus the waves were pretty aggressive when I was there which makes surfing even tougher for beginners. Great for partying - at least on the Friday and Saturday night I was in Tamarindo there were several bars and clubs. That said, I've heard that folks who stayed in other popular beach towns like Santa Teresa and Nosara enjoyed it more.
Things to do: Bar crawl ($25 USD) was pretty fun and Crazy Monkeys was my favourite spot as it was a rooftop club with acrobatics (think: a very, very scaled down version of Coco Bongo). Cheap surf lessons at Banana Surf Club, $20 or 30 USD for 2 hours. Not much to do from an outdoors/adventure perspective.
Food: Tough to find cheap local options as the Sodas are not walkable from the center of town. The food options were pretty westernized. The Mahi Mahi tacos from Green Papaya Cafe were my second favourite meal. Witches Rock had a cool vibe with live music and it's beach front patio. Tried several places in the small food court but they ranged from mediocre to bad. The Carribean food truck in the food truck yard was terrible as the meat is literally microwaved. Heard good things about the food at El Be and coffee at the shop above White Lotus but didn't try myself.
Transportation: Shuttle from airport for $25 USD each (1 van shared with 4 others)
Monteverde/Santa Elena, 2 nights
Scene: Quite literally in the mountains. Much quieter and sparse vs the other places in Costa Rica. Great for outdoor adventures, renowned for coffee, and most notably the home of a large cloud forest reserve, etc.
Food: CASEM co-op was quaint and the tortilla with meat was decent. Raulitos was decent as well. Sabor Tico was highly recommended by the locals but I thought it was disappointing (plus very expensive). Cafe Choco was a great place for coffee (though contrary to the name, they do not make chocolate).
Things to do: Between 100% Aventura (which I did for $54 USD), Selvatura, and Extremo, there's lots of great ziplining/Tarzan swing excursions available and I'd highly recommend doing one of them. I would ignore any claims like "largest zipline in Costa Rica" because I saw several ziplines throughout the country making similar but nuanced claims. Night walks are also popular but the one I did ($25 USD purchased at the Selvatura office in town) was terrible - saw a couple interesting animals from afar but was otherwise underwhelmingly focused on bugs (read: boring) and I didn't like the guide. Didn't visit the cloud forest or do a coffee tour but those are the other popular things to do here.
Transportation: Shuttle for $50 USD (van with ~6 others)
La Fortuna, 2 nights
Scene: Typical tourist town (not necessarily in a bad way) that felt like a hybrid of all the other places I visited in Costa Rica. Has a good variety of things to do ranging from quiet outdoor activities to partying. As has been well documented here on Reddit, you have to pay for pretty much every hike though there are a small handful of free activities.
Food: My favourite meal in Costa Rica was at Travesia. While the prices appear high, each meal we got could have probably fed 2+ people. A must try. A close contender because of its low price was Pollolandia, which is a no-frills fried chicken chain located throughout the country. Rain Forest Cafe was decent. Soda Viquez is highly recommended and definitely filling but the food is very low quality and served from a hot table that has likely been sitting all day - I didn't like it.
Things to do: My favourite activity during my trip was the level 3-4 rafting ($85 USD). It was my first time and a ton of fun, especially for those who like high adrenaline activities. The river level was a bit low though which led to us getting stuck a lot. We hiked through the private Volcano Arenal for $18 USD which was a pretty decent hike though you don't actually get too close to Volcano itself. There's a vendor in the parking lot selling cheap fresh coconuts (1,200 CRC) which was a great refresher after the hike. We also did the La Fortuna waterfall for ~$20 USD which was beautiful. The Don Juan coffee and chocolate tour ($45 USD) which was nice as well, though someone later suggested the Northfields one could be better because it's less "corporate" than Don Juan. Partying, at least on the weekdays that I was here, was pretty limited. Charlie's was the only place open during the week but pretty empty. Drinks were cheap though (~3,000 CRC per). In terms of free activities, there's a great swimming area with a rope swing, an okay hot spring a short walk from the road, and a free waterfall that I didn't get to visit. Also, on the trip from Monteverde>La Fortuna our shuttle service had us switch from bus>boat>bus again which we didn't know would happen upon booking but actually made for a nice, makeshift boat tour around the Arenal Volcano
Transportation: Shuttle for $50-70 USD (don't remember the exact amount) (bus/boat with ~12 others)
Liberia, 1 night
I know everyone says to skip it but I had an early morning flight the next day and wanted to be close to the airport. Next time, I think I'd just stay in a nearby beach town like Playa Hermosa instead which is equally far from the airport. Not much to do and my Airbnb on the south side of town felt a bit sketchy. This is more specific to the Airbnb itself but despite the great reviews it was terrible - flooded during heavy rainfall, bad smells, and lots of bugs. Cafe Negro was great for breakfast and coffee, though. Also if you're flying from this airport beware that alcohol at the souvenir shops is significantly overpriced. There's a smaller duty free shop near gate 5 that sells the example same products for much less (e.g. 750ml Cacique for $15 vs $23 USD)
Transportation: Private driver (shuttles were sold out as we tried booking the day before) for $115 USD (SUV with up to 4 seats and the cost can be split by all passengers; driver also stopped at Rio Celeste, a popular river to swim in, on the way)
Other, general thoughts:

2023.05.27 00:29 Right-Corner5091 Seething and crying right now

We had to return a rental car today and stopped near the airport to fill up. My son and husband were talking by the pump and I noticed the van next to us. There was a youngish looking guy sitting in the passenger seat with his feet on the dash, looking down at what I assume was his phone. Then I see her. A barefoot, hugely pregnant young woman dressed in a ratty, ripped tee shirt who was pumping gas and cleaning out her van. She opened the back doors and there were two car seats, both rear-facing. She was giving the kids some teddy grahams. I couldn’t be certain but it appeared she had a bruise by her eye. I got out of the car and was going to ask if she needed help but my husband came over and told me to get back in the car. I started crying because I felt so freaking helpless. Y’all, this guy just sat there. It is hot as heck here in Phoenix and he was letting his pregnant wife do all this barefooted while he sat on his ass. I still think I should have done something but don’t know what I could do. I’m still upset. Am I wrong? Is the situation as messed up as I think?

Trail of Tears

In 1830, at President Andrew Jackson’s urging, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in order to free up land for the nation’s expanding white population.
The act granted the president the power to negotiate treaties with Native American tribes to relinquish their lands east of the Mississippi River in exchange for unsettled lands west of the river.
While some Indians complied peacefully, the Cherokee, among other tribes, resisted. In 1838, U.S. troops rounded up the Cherokees from their traditional lands in the southern Appalachians, held them in camps then forced them to relocate to Indian Territory, in present-day Oklahoma.
An estimated 15,000 to 16,000 Cherokee people made the grueling journey west, following one of several routes that collectively became known as the Trail of Tears. Along the way, some 3,000 to 4,000 of them died from disease, malnutrition and exposure.
Check out seven facts about this infamous chapter in American history.
Davy Crockett objected to Indian removal.
Frontiersman Davy Crockett, whose grandparents were killed by Creeks and Cherokees, was a scout for Andrew Jackson during the Creek War (1813-14). However, while serving as a U.S. congressman from Tennessee, Crockett broke with President Jackson over the Indian Removal Act, calling it unjust. Despite warnings that his opposition to Indian removal would cost him his seat in Congress, where he’d served since 1827, Crockett said, “I would sooner be honestly and politically damned than hypocritically immortalized.” The year after the act’s 1830 passage, Crockett lost his bid for reelection. After being voted back into office in 1833, he continued to express his opposition to Jackson’s policy and wrote that he would leave the U.S. for the “wildes of Texas” if Martin Van Buren, Jackson’s vice president, succeeded him in the White House. After Crockett was again defeated for reelection, in 1835, he did go to Texas, where he died fighting at the Alamo in March 1836.
Renegade Cherokees signed a treaty selling all tribal lands.
John Ross, who was of Scottish and Cherokee ancestry and became the tribe’s principal chief in 1828, was strongly opposed to giving up the Cherokees’ ancestral lands, as were the majority of the Cherokee people. However, a small group within the tribe believed it was inevitable that white settlers would keep encroaching on their lands and therefore the only way to preserve Cherokee culture and survive as a tribe was to move west. In 1835, while Ross was away, this minority faction signed a treaty at New Echota, the Cherokee Nation capital (located in Georgia), agreeing to sell the U.S. government all tribal lands in the East in exchange for $5 million and new land in the West. As part of the agreement, the government was supposed help cover the Cherokees’ moving costs and pay to support them during their first year in Indian Territory. When Ross found out about the treaty, he argued it had been made illegally. Nevertheless, in 1836 it was ratified by a single vote in the U.S. Senate and signed by President Jackson. The treaty gave the Cherokees two years to vacate their lands. In June 1839, after the Cherokees had been forced to relocate to Indian Territory, several leaders of the so-called Treaty Party, who’d advocated for the New Echota agreement, were assassinated by tribe members who’d opposed removal to the west.
Martin Van Buren ordered the roundup of the Cherokees.
During his two terms in the White House, from 1829 to 1837, Andrew Jackson was responsible for putting Indian removal policies in place; however, he left office before the 1838 deadline for the Cherokees to surrender their lands in the East. It was Jackson’s presidential successor, Martin Van Buren, who ordered General Winfield Scott to forcibly evict the Cherokees. Scott’s troops rounded up thousands of Cherokees and then imprisoned them in forts in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama. During these roundups, the Indians weren’t given time to pack and family members, including children, sometimes got left behind if they weren’t home when the soldiers showed up. The Indians were transferred from the forts to detention camps, most of them in Tennessee, to await deportation. At both the forts and camps, living conditions were bleak and diseases rampant, and an unknown number of Cherokees died.
The Trail of Tears wasn’t just one route.
The first group of Cherokees departed Tennessee in June 1838 and headed to Indian Territory by boat, a journey that took them along the Tennessee, Ohio, Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. Heat and extended drought soon made travel along this water route impractical, so that fall and winter thousands more Cherokees were forced to trek from Tennessee to present-day Oklahoma via one of several overland routes. Federal officials allowed Chief John Ross to take charge of these overland removals, and he organized the Indians into 13 groups, each comprised of nearly a thousand people. Although there were some wagons and horses, most people had to walk.
The route followed by the largest number of Cherokees—12,000 people or more, according to some estimates—was the northern route, a distance of more than 800 miles through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and into Indian Territory. The last groups of Cherokees made it to Indian Territory in March 1839. A century later, Route 66, the iconic highway established in 1926, overlapped with part of this route, from Rolla to Springfield, Missouri.

Not all Cherokees left the Southeast.
A small group of Cherokee people managed to remain in North Carolina, either as a result of an 1819 agreement that enabled them to stay on their land there, or because they hid in the mountains from the U.S. soldiers sent to capture them. The group, which also included people who walked back from Indian Territory, became known as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Today, the group has approximately 12,500 members, who live primarily in western North Carolina on the 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary.

The Cherokees rebuilt in Indian Territory.
In the first years after their arrival in Indian Territory, life was difficult for many Cherokees. However, under the leadership of Chief Ross the tribe rebuilt in the 1840s and 1850s, establishing businesses and a public school system and publishing what was then America’s only tribal newspaper. When the U.S. Civil War broke out, the Cherokee Nation found itself politically divided. Ross initially believed the Cherokees should remain neutral in the conflict, but there was a faction who supported the South so the chief made an alliance with the Confederacy, in part to try to keep the Cherokees united. Ross soon grew disillusioned with the Confederates, who had abandoned their promises of protection and supplies to the Indians. Ross spent the rest of the war in Philadelphia, where his second wife had a home (his first wife died while walking the Trail of Tears) and Washington, D.C., trying to convince President Abraham Lincoln that the Cherokees were loyal to the Union. Ross died of illness on August 1, 1866, having served as principal chief for nearly 40 years.
The U.S. apologized to Native American groups in 2009.
In December 2009, President Barack Obama signed a bill that included an official apology to all American Indian tribes for past injustices. U.S. Senators Sam Brownback of Kansas and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota led a bipartisan effort to pass the resolution, which stated: “the United States, acting through Congress…recognizes that there have been years of official depredations, ill-conceived policies, and the breaking of covenants by the Federal Government regarding Indian tribes.” However, the resolution did not call for reparations and included a disclaimer that it wasn’t meant to support any legal claims against the United States.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the beginning of the 1830s, nearly 125,000 Native Americans lived on millions of acres of land in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida–land their ancestors had occupied and cultivated for generations.
By the end of the decade, very few natives remained anywhere in the southeastern United States.
Working on behalf of white settlers who wanted to grow cotton on the Indians’ land, the federal government forced them to leave their homelands and walk thousands of miles to a specially designated “Indian territory” across the Mississippi River.
This difficult and sometimes deadly journey is known as the Trail of Tears.
THE “INDIAN PROBLEM”
White Americans, particularly those who lived on the western frontier, often feared and resented the Native Americans they encountered:
To them, American Indians seemed to be an unfamiliar, alien people who occupied land that white settlers wanted (and believed they deserved).
Some officials in the early years of the American republic, such as President George Washington, believed that the best way to solve this “Indian problem” was simply to “civilize” the Native Americans.
The goal of this civilization campaign was to make Native Americans as much like white Americans as possible by encouraging them convert to Christianity, learn to speak and read English, and adopt European-style economic practices such as the individual ownership of land and other property (including, in some instances in the South, African slaves).
In the southeastern United States, many Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Creek and Cherokee people embraced these customs and became known as the “Five Civilized Tribes.”
Indian removal took place in the Northern states as well.
In Illinois and Wisconsin, for example, the bloody Black Hawk War in 1832 opened to white settlement millions of acres of land that had belonged to the Sauk, Fox and other native nations.
But their land, located in parts of Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee, was valuable, and it grew to be more coveted as white settlers flooded the region.
Many of these whites yearned to make their fortunes by growing cotton, and they did not care how “civilized” their native neighbors were:
They wanted that land and they would do almost anything to get it.
They stole livestock; burned and looted houses and towns;, and squatted on land that did not belong to them.
State governments joined in this effort to drive Native Americans out of the South.
Several states passed laws limiting Native American sovereignty and rights and encroaching on their territory. In a few cases, such as Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831) and Worcester v. Georgia (1832), the U.S. Supreme Court objected to these practices and affirmed that native nations were sovereign nations “in which the laws of Georgia [and other states] can have no force.”
Even so, the maltreatment continued.
As President Andrew Jackson noted in 1832, if no one intended to enforce the Supreme Court’s rulings (which he certainly did not), then the decisions would “[fall]…still born.” Southern states were determined to take ownership of Indian lands and would go to great lengths to secure this territory.
INDIAN REMOVAL
Andrew Jackson had long been an advocate of what he called “Indian removal.”
As an Army general, he had spent years leading brutal campaigns against the Creeks in Georgia and Alabama and the Seminoles in Florida–campaigns that resulted in the transfer of hundreds of thousands of acres of land from Indian nations to white farmers.
As president, he continued this crusade.
In 1830, he signed the Indian Removal Act, which gave the federal government the power to exchange Native-held land in the cotton kingdom east of the Mississippi for land to the west, in the “Indian colonization zone” that the United States had acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
(This “Indian territory” was located in present-day Oklahoma.)
The law required the government to negotiate removal treaties fairly, voluntarily and peacefully: It did not permit the president or anyone else to coerce Native nations into giving up their land.
However, President Jackson and his government frequently ignored the letter of the law and forced Native Americans to vacate lands they had lived on for generations.
In the winter of 1831, under threat of invasion by the U.S. Army, the Choctaw became the first nation to be expelled from its land altogether.
They made the journey to Indian territory on foot (some “bound in chains and marched double file,” one historian writes) and without any food, supplies or other help from the government.
Thousands of people died along the way.
It was, one Choctaw leader told an Alabama newspaper, a “trail of tears and death.”
THE TRAIL OF TEARS
The Indian-removal process continued. In 1836, the federal government drove the Creeks from their land for the last time: 3,500 of the 15,000 Creeks who set out for Oklahoma did not survive the trip.
The Cherokee people were divided:
What was the best way to handle the government’s determination to get its hands on their territory?
Some wanted to stay and fight.
Others thought it was more pragmatic to agree to leave in exchange for money and other concessions.
In 1835, a few self-appointed representatives of the Cherokee nation negotiated the Treaty of New Echota, which traded all Cherokee land east of the Mississippi for $5 million, relocation assistance and compensation for lost property.
To the federal government, the treaty was a done deal, but many of the Cherokee felt betrayed:
After all, the negotiators did not represent the tribal government or anyone else.
“The instrument in question is not the act of our nation,” wrote the nation’s principal chief, John Ross, in a letter to the U.S. Senate protesting the treaty.
“We are not parties to its covenants; it has not received the sanction of our people.”
Nearly 16,000 Cherokees signed Ross’s petition, but Congress approved the treaty anyway.
By 1838, only about 2,000 Cherokees had left their Georgia homeland for Indian territory. President Martin Van Buren sent General Winfield Scott and 7,000 soldiers to expedite the removal process.
Scott and his troops forced the Cherokee into stockades at bayonet point while whites looted their homes and belongings.
Then, they marched the Indians more than 1,200 miles to Indian territory.
Whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, cholera and starvation were epidemic along the way, and historians estimate that more than 5,000 Cherokee died as a result of the journey.
By 1840, tens of thousands of Native Americans had been driven off of their land in the southeastern states and forced to move across the Mississippi to Indian territory.
The federal government promised that their new land would remain unmolested forever, but as the line of white settlement pushed westward, “Indian country” shrank and shrank.
In 1907, Oklahoma became a state and Indian territory was gone for good.

Trail of Tears

"I saw the helpless Cherokees arrested and dragged from their homes, and driven at the bayonet point into the stockades. And in the chill of a drizzling rain on an October morning I saw them loaded like cattle or sheep into six hundred and forty-five wagons and started toward the west....On the morning of November the 17th we encountered a terrific sleet and snow storm with freezing temperatures and from that day until we reached the end of the fateful journey on March the 26th 1839, the sufferings of the Cherokees were awful. The trail of the exiles was a trail of death. They had to sleep in the wagons and on the ground without fire. And I have known as many as twenty-two of them to die in one night of pneumonia due to ill treatment, cold and exposure..."

Private John G. Burnett, Captain Abraham McClellan's Company, 2nRegiment, 2nd Brigade, Mounted Infantry, Cherokee Indian Removal, 1838-39

Timeline
1700- Settlers continued to increase their number by birth and by immigration. There wasn’t enough land to go around so the settlers moved ever westward. More land was needed for tobacco plantations, as England demanded ever mote taxes. The Cherokees would leave a hunting territory for a few seasons to allow the wildlife to recover. When they returned they found the forest cut, dozens of cabins, and no wildlife in sight. The Cherokees would try to scare the settlers away, but the settlers had guns. When the settlers won, they called it an Indian war. When the Indians won, the white men called it a massacre.

1750 - The King of England made treaties with the Indians and gave them ‘King’s Grants’ to the land they claimed. The British sent soldiers to protect the boundaries and to regulate the fur trade between the Indians and the colonies. Soldiers took Indian wives and began calling the children after their own family names. Traders and Indian Agents caught smallpox in the settlements and rapidly spread it to the Indians who had no immunity. Within a few short years, the Indian population was reduced to about one-tenth of its original size.
The traders offered guns for furs. The Indians slaughtered hundreds of animals for furs to trade, and when they looked for game to eat, it had been nearly wiped out. The Cherokees would leave an area to let the game recover, and the settlers took this as a sign that the Indians had abandoned the land, and move in.

1775 – During the Revolutionary war, the Cherokees took the side of the British and attacked white settlements in their territory. After the war, many British soldiers decided to stay in the Cherokee Nation with their families. The new American government refused to honor the earlier ‘King’s Grants’ and sent the American Army to force the Cherokees to sign new treaties, which required them to give up more land.

By 1800, the Cherokee Nation had shrunk to less than ¼ of it’s original size. Most Cherokees had retreated to lands in northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Many had adopted white ways. The US government and the State of Georgia adopted anti-Indian policies, and used soldiers to enforce the new laws.

1812 – General Andrew Jackson wanted to drive out the Indians, but they were too strong for his army. He settled on a policy of divide and conquer. He started the French and Indian War of 1812 with the help of the Cherokees, they thought that by helping Andy Jackson drive out the Creek Indians, they would be given special treatment and left alone by the whites. Chief Tecumseh, of the Shawnee, tried to unify the remaining Indian Nations in a last ditch stand to resist the white invasion. In 1813, Chief Tecumseh died in battle and his dreams of a unified Indian Nation died with him.

1815 – The US government forced or tricked many Cherokees into signing treaties to trade their lands for land in Arkansas and Oklahoma. About half of the Cherokees left for the New Territories and became known as the Old Settlers.

1828 – Andrew Jackson was elected president, and Gold was discovered in Georgia. The US government was split as to protect the Cherokees land claims, or to let Georgia drive them out. Gold fever swept the south. Miners and get rich quick scam artists invaded Cherokee Territory murdering, raping, and burning. Chief James Vann, a district judge for the Cherokees, captured, tried and hung the criminals. Georgia threatened war over the outrage of Cherokees hanging white men. The Cherokees sent lawyers and statesmen to court to argue their case. The federal government had given them treaties for the land and they should be protected from the citizens and army of Georgia. Georgia governor, George Gilmore stated, “Treaties were a means by which ignorant, intractable, and savage people were induced to yield what Civilized Peoples had a right to possess.”

1830 – The US Supreme Court decided in favor of protecting the Cherokees land rights. President Andrew Jackson defied the Supreme Court and sent the army to Georgia to drive out the Cherokees. Jackson proclaimed, “Justice John Marshall has rendered his decision, now let him enforce it.” President Jackson signed the ‘Indian Removal Act’, which required the forced removal of all Indians east of the Mississippi River to the new ‘vacant’ land obtained in the “Louisiana Purchase, to be guaranteed to the Indian tribes for as long as they shall occupy it”. Between 1830 and 1839, hundreds of Cherokee families fled the district, to Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina. Even while these cases were being argued in court, the state of Georgia organized a land lottery to divide up the Cherokee Nation into farms and gold claims.

1831 – The Choctaws were driven from their homes in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The federal government had agreed to pay to feed and clothe the Indians on their journey, but the money never came.

1836 – The Creeks were driven out at the point of a gun, put in chains and forced-marched by the US Army. Some 3,500 men women and children died of hunger and exposure along the way.

1837 – The Chickasaw loaded their belongings on wagons and headed west. The Seminoles chose to fight. After a long bloody war, the survivors were herded like cattle into any boat that would float and taken across the Gulf of Mexico and up the Mississippi.

1838 – Seven thousand federal troops, under the command of General Winfield Scott, were dispatched to the Cherokee Nation. Without warning, the troops broke down doors and drug people away to stockades. Those that moved too slowly were prodded with bayonets. In October, the Cherokees were herded into wooden stockades with no food, water, blankets, or sanitation. Most of them were barefoot and had no coats or blankets, yet they were forced to cross rivers in sub-zero weather.

They were forced-marched, with army guards, as far north as Indiana, on their way to Oklahoma. Thousands of men, women, and children froze to death, died of starvation and disease. The soldiers forced the Cherokees to abandon their dead at the side of the road. What few pitiful possessions they owned, had to be dropped at the side of the road in order to carry the sick and dying. Soldiers and settlers plundered the ancient Cherokee burial grounds for buried treasure. Family possessions left behind were plundered and burned. Of the 22,000 Cherokees who started this death-march, some 5,500 died on the way. One thousand six hundred Freedmen walked the Trail of Tears along with the rest of Cherokee.

At the plantation of Spring Place, the Georgia Guard threw a burning log onto the stairs to smoke out the people that lived there. The man who had won the house in the Georgia state lottery was there, urging the soldiers on to get ‘those people’ out of ‘his’ house. The Georgia Guard drove the missionaries out of their homes and school nearby, and turned it into a brothel for the army.

The witnesses

A guard (some years later) wrote, “I fought through the War (Civil War), and I saw men shot to pieces and slaughtered by the thousands, but the Cherokee Removal was the cruelest work I ever knew.”

A traveler from Maine wrote “Aging females, apparently nearly ready to drop into the grave, were traveling with heavy burdens attached to their backs – on frozen ground with no covering for their feet except what nature had given them. We learned from the inhabitants of the road where the Indians passed that they buried fourteen or fifteen at each stopping place.”

John G Burnett, a soldier who participated in the Removal wrote, “Men working in fields were arrested and driven into stockades. Women were dragged from their homes, by soldiers whose language they did not understand. Children were separated from their parents and driven into stockades with the sky for a blanket and the earth for a pillow. The old and infirm were prodded with bayonets to hasten them to the stockades. In one home, death had come during the night, a sad faced little child had died and was lying on a bear skin couch and some women were preparing the little boy for burial. All were arrested and driven out, leaving the dead child in the cabin. I don’t know who buried the body.
In another home was a frail mother, apparently a widow and three small children, one just a baby. When told that she must go, the mother gathered the children at her feet, prayed a humble prayer in her native tongue, patted the old family dog on the head, told the faithful creature goodbye, with a baby strapped on her back and leading a child with each hand, started on her exile. But the task was too great for the frail mother. A stroke of heart failure relieved her suffering. She sunk and died with her baby on her back, and her other two children clinging to her hands”

The survivors

Butrick: Butrick crossed the Ohio on Dec. 15, 1838, he didn't see the Mississippi River until Jan. 25. Even then, it took three more weeks to get all the people in his contingent crossed. From the time the first contingent crossed the Ohio in November to the last part of Butrick's group in February, The Cherokees spent three months in Southern Illinois.
According to Butrick's diary, by Dec. 29, 1838, the detachments were spread out across the region. "One detachment stopped at the Ohio River, two at the Mississippi, one four miles this side, one 16 miles this side, one 18 miles, and one 13 miles behind us. In all these detachments, comprising about 8,000 souls, there is now a vast amount of sickness, and many deaths," wrote Butrick who himself was suffering from fever and a cough.

Quatie Ross: Although suffering from a cold, Quatie Ross, the Chief John Ross wife, gave her only blanket to a child. "Long time we travel on way to new land. People feel bad when they leave Old Nation. Women cry and make sad wails, Children cry and many men cry...but they say nothing and just put heads down and keep on go towards West. Many days pass and people die very much." She died of pneumonia at Little Rock. Some drank stagnant water and succumbed to disease. One survivor told how his father got sick and died; then, his mother; then, one by one, his five brothers and sisters. "One each day. Then all are gone."

Samuel Cloud: Samuel Cloud turned 9 years old on the Trail of Tears. Samuel's Memory is told by his great-great grandson, Micheal Rutledge, in his paper Forgiveness in the Age of Forgetfulness. Micheal, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is a law student at Arizona State University.

It is Spring. The leaves are on the trees. I am playing with my friends when white men in uniforms ride up to our home. My mother calls me. I can tell by her voice that something is wrong. Some of the men ride off. My mother tells me to gather my things, but the men don't allow us time to get anything. They enter our home and begin knocking over pottery and looking into everything. My mother and I are taken by several men to where their horses are and are held there at gun point. The men who rode off return with my father, Elijah. They have taken his rifle and he is walking toward us.
I can feel his anger and frustration. There is nothing he can do. From my mother I feel fear. I am filled with fear, too. What is going on? I was just playing, but now my family and my friends' families are gathered together and told to walk at the point of a bayonet.
We walk a long ways. My mother does not let me get far from her. My father is walking by the other men, talking in low, angry tones. The soldiers look weary, as though they'd rather be anywhere else but here.

They lead us to a stockade. They herd us into this pen like we are cattle. No one was given time to gather any possessions. The nights are still cold in the mountains and we do not have enough blankets to go around. My mother holds me at night to keep me warm. That is the only time I feel safe. I feel her pull me to her tightly. I feel her warm breath in my hair. I feel her softness as I fall asleep at night.

As the days pass, more and more of our people are herded into the stockade. I see other members of my clan. We children try to play, but the elders around us are anxious and we do not know what to think. I often sit and watch the others around me. I observe the guards. I try not to think about my hunger. I am cold.

Several months have passed and still we are in the stockades. My father looks tired. He talks with the other men, but no one seems to know what to do or what is going to happen. We hear that white men have moved into our homes and are farming our fields. What will happen to us? We are to march west to join the Western Cherokees. I don't want to leave these mountains.
My mother, my aunts and uncles take me aside one day. "Your father died last night," they tell me. My mother and my father's clan members are crying, but I do not understand what this means. I saw him yesterday. He was sick, but still alive. It doesn't seem real. Nothing seems real. I don't know what any of this means. It seems like yesterday, I was playing with my friends.
It is now Fall. It seems like forever since I was clean. The stockade is nothing but mud. In the morning it is stiff with frost. By mid-afternoon, it is soft and we are all covered in it. The soldiers suddenly tell us we are to follow them. We are led out of the stockade. The guards all have guns and are watching us closely. We walk. My mother keeps me close to her. I am allowed to walk with my uncle or an aunt, occasionally.

We walk across the frozen earth. Nothing seems right anymore. The cold seeps through my clothes. I wish I had my blanket. I remember last winter I had a blanket, when I was warm. I don't feel like I'll ever be warm again. I remember my father's smile. It seems like so long ago.
We walked for many days. I don't know how long it has been since we left our home, but the mountains are behind us. Each day, we start walking a little later. They bury the dead in shallow graves, because the ground is frozen. As we walk past white towns, the whites come out to watch us pass. No words are spoken to them. No words are said to us. Still, I wish they would stop staring. I wish it were them walking in this misery and I were watching them. It is because of them that we are walking. I don't understand why, but I know that much. They made us leave our homes. They made us walk to this new place we are heading in the middle of winter. I do not like these people. Still, they stare at me as I walk past.

My mother is coughing now. She looks worn. Her hands and face are burning hot. My aunts and uncles try to take care of me, so she can get better. I don't want to leave her alone. I just want to sit with her. I want her to stroke my hair, like she used to do. My aunts try to get me to sleep by them, but at night, I creep to her side. She coughs and it wracks her whole body. When she feels me by her side, she opens her blanket and lets me in. I nestle against her feverish body. I can make it another day, I know, because she is here.

When I went to sleep last night, my mother was hot and coughing worse than usual. When I woke up, she was cold. I tried to wake her up, but she lay there. The soft warmth she once was, she is no more. I kept touching her, as hot tears stream down my face. She couldn't leave me. She wouldn't leave me.

I hear myself call her name, softly, then louder. She does not answer. My aunt and uncle come over to me to see what is wrong. My aunt looks at my mother. My uncle pulls me from her. My aunt begins to wail. I will never forget that wail. I did not understand when my father died. My mother's death I do not understand, but I suddenly know that I am alone. My clan will take care of me, but I will be forever denied her warmth, the soft fingers in my hair, her gentle breath as we slept. I am alone. I want to cry. I want to scream in rage. I can do nothing.

We bury her in a shallow grave by the road. I will never forget that lonesome hill of stone that is her final bed, as it fades from my sight. I tread softly by my uncle, my hand in his. I walk with my head turned, watching that small hill as it fades from my sight. The soldiers make us continue walking. My uncle talks to me, trying to comfort me. I walk in loneliness.

I know what it is to hate. I hate those white soldiers who took us from our home. I hate the soldiers who make us keep walking through the snow and ice toward this new home that none of us ever wanted. I hate the people who killed my father and mother.

I hate the white people who lined the roads in their woolen clothes that kept them warm, watching us pass. None of those white people are here to say they are sorry that I am alone. None of them care about me or my people. All they ever saw was the color of our skin. All I see is the color of theirs and I hate them.
There were ten million Native Americans on this continent when the first non-Indians arrived. Over the next 300 years, 90% of all Native American original population was either wiped out by disease, famine, or warfare imported by the whites.
By 1840 all the eastern tribes had been subdued, annihilated or forcibly removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi.

2023.05.26 10:40 Prudent_Pause6248 Can "First-Class Package Service - Retail" mean "Slow boat to Hawaii"?

"First-Class Package Service - Retail" shipped from Ohio on the 8th. Coming to Hawaii. It's very overdue. Tracking looks like this...
May 12 In Transit to Next Facility, Arriving Late
May 08 11:39 pm Arrived at USPS Regional Origin Facility COLUMBUS OH DISTRIBUTION CENTER
May 08 4:31 pm Departed Post Office FORT RECOVERY,OH 45846
May 08 9:08 am USPS in possession of item FORT RECOVERY,OH 45846
(9500 1131 9781 3128 4956 16)
Because it's coming to Hawaii, is it possible that this got put onto a truck, and then boat, and that would explain the delay? It would have been an accident I assume, but it would explain what's going on.
This package is actually worth quite a bit of money. So losing it would be a real stinger. If anybody can make me feel better, that'd be great.

2023.05.26 04:35 London-Roma-1980 NON-CONFERENCE MATCHDAY 9 PREVIEW

Next week, for the last few rounds, we're going to focus on mid-majors making noise -- either two top mid-majors going at it or a top mid-major trying to claim the scalp of a ranked team. But before we get there, let's look at a pair of ranked schools trying to preserve their place in the Top 25. A loss by either may be catastrophic to their chances.
*****
#25 Arizona State Sun Devils (6-2) at #12 Indiana Hoosiers (6-2).
To be on a tier underneath the two Tobacco Road titans is hardly an indictment. The last two days have seen Arizona State get floored by North Carolina, then Indiana routed by Duke. Now, the two teams try to figure out if their lackluster performances were meant to set off alarm bells or just a sign that the Big Five are that far ahead.
"If you look at the results of the last, what, 7 years -- it's just been five schools in the title game," Sun Devils coach Ned Wulk noted. (He's not wrong: UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Duke have met in some combination over the last 9 seasons, in fact.) "We know how good that team is. We also know Indiana can compete with the best if they get a chance. This is our gut check."
The Sun Devils are paced by guard play. Depending on the opponent, Byron Scott, James Harden, and Fat Lever rotate in and out, constantly putting pressure on opponents with their driving and long-range shooting. Swingman Joe Caldwell has a chance to be the difference maker for them.
The Hoosiers will counter with a high-low game featuring Isiah Thomas and Walt Bellamy. The Van Arsdale twins can provide mid- to long-range jumpers when necessary -- Rick is more an outside shooter than Tom -- and if depth is called for, Eric Gordan and Victor Oladipo can run a more standard offense.
"This team is solid up and down the line," reserve forward Alan Henderson told reporters after practice. "We've been to a Final Four recently, and we feel we can come back. We're not off to the start we want, but we'll be able to turn it around, and this is the time we do it."

2023.05.26 03:17 AmusedBlue UHaul Van Camping Help

Oh so to be brief I’m going to LostLands and will be doing car Camping, we originally had my car to commute in to Ohio but that got busted so now our backup is to fly there and figure it out. Last year I remember seeing UHaul vans go in to the campgrounds so I ask. How was the process for you!?
Did you select the “More Time” option and input 3+ days and did a representative give you a call!? Did the location of rental ask why or honor the reservation without questions? Otherwise the second option will be to just get a rental car or van but the UHaul is definitely cheaper by comparison! Tell me your experience if you have one or suggestions! Please thank you in advance and love you!!!!

Freightliner Sprinter 2500 asking $41,000 - Description in comments
TECHNICAL SPECS:
  • 2008 Freightliner Sprinter 2500
  • 3.0L 6F Diesel, RWD
  • 225,759 miles
  • 170" Wheelbase
NO ACCIDENTS! NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS!
VAN STORY:
My wife and I purchased this van in the summer of 2022 and spent 6 months driving around North America with our dog. With us it has been through roughly 30 states and 3 provinces and seen some of the most beautiful scenery, parked in the coolest downtowns, and boondocked in the most wild and remote places. Before us it was also a van life van and the previous owner spent two years traveling around the states and living off grid!
We love this van and had intended on being it's forever owners but I had a sudden career change and it was simpler for my wife and I to settle near my family and plant for a while. We plan to purchase a home and are selling to help fund that goal.
The build out was done by a combo of the previous owner and licensed plumbers/electricians/carpenters. Anything that wasn't a simple build was done by the licensed professional which includes all gas line work for the stove/oven, solar install, lighting, diesel heater install, etc.
This van was very comfortable for my wife and I and our poodle and while it's obviously a small space it is very well laid out and practical. Nothing is wasted. Our favorite parts are the spacious storage which includes a closet and the cute little dinette! We ate here for most meals unless it was really nice outside and we wanted to enjoy the weather. Also, I'm 6ft and being able to stand inside is a luxury I'm glad I didn't have to do without.
The van also has ample room in the back for supplies, toys, tools, etc. I stored multiple tool kits, a blow up kayak, camp stoves and chairs, tons of stuff for our dog, a jackery, and a whole slew of other things with room to spare.
RECENT REPAIRS/ WORK:
  • When we purchased this van it needed the brake line repaired. The temporary repair didn't make me feel very comfortable in Colorado mountains so I had a shop in FT Collins custom build a brand new set of brake lines for it in September.
  • It also had an engine light on, which was coding for a glow plug problem. I had a hard time finding the actual root of the problem as the light still remained on after replacing all 6 glow plugs. In March I had a Mercedes shop replace the glow plug module itself and all 6 plugs again and now the van has no check engine light and no codes.
  • The only warning light still showing right now is when the headlights are turned on. This light indicates a bulb needs to be changed. I have changed both bulbs and the light will not turn off. I'm not sure if there is a reset I'm missing but the bulbs have been changed. The indicator light doesn't show until you turn on the headlights.
MORE WORK DONE:
  • transmission replaced under warranty at 100k
  • new turbo (2018)
  • DPF Delete (2018)
  • Alternator replaced 4k miles ago
  • Filters replaced 5k miles ago
  • fluids topped off recently
  • oil recently changed
  • new rear tires 20k ago (front tires still have plenty of life but were installed in 2020)
I have hard copy records for lots of maintenance before me and all maintenance records since I bought it.
Okay so now to the good stuff about the build!
ELECTRICAL/SOLAR:
  • Three 100W solar panels, Renogy 300W 12 volt monocrystalline solar RV kit w/ Renogy Adventurer controller
  • Battery I believe is 250+ Ah marine battery. The previous owner said it came recommended with her solar kit and the pros installed it. I have included a picture of the serial number in the photos. It powers the interior lights, outlets, roof fan, diesel heater, and fridge and in our 6 months of driving and some weeks of terrible weather where we stayed inside all day it never fell below the normal use threshold
  • Fan-Tastic 3 speed manual crank RV Fan 1200 series
  • Diesel Webasto Bunk Heater
  • Pioneer AVH2230NEX Radio
  • Garmin GPS RV model w/ back up camera (back up camera is Bluetooth to Garmin GPS so doesn't show on built in van display)
OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT:
  • Two motion window camper style windows and screens
  • ARB 4x4 retractable awning (ARB4401A)
  • Roof rack
  • Grill guard
  • large outdoor rug
  • Coleman 2 burner camp stove
KITCHEN:
  • ARB portable fridge/freezer 50qt Electric 12V/110V
  • Three burner Wedgewood Vision propane oven/stove combo (this thing is amazing to have in a van! We didn't have to miss out on homemade pizza!)
  • Sink, 12v water pump w/ interchangeable 5 gal tanks for fresh/gray water
  • Custom Tile mosaic
  • Stained wood countertops
  • Dinette table
  • Lots of kitchen storage!
  • A literal banana hammock (I really should be charging a premium to include this lol)
LIVING:
  • Dresser for clothes
  • Closet with mirror
  • Storage in dinette chair bases
  • Curtains and pull down blinds
  • Overhead LED lighting
  • Cheap fairy lights down the interior side of the van. Easily replaced or removed
  • Luxury vinyl plank flooring
BEDROOM:
  • Horizontal custom queen mattress 6" gel memory foam 72x60
(I'm 6ft and my wife is 5'3. I imagine any taller than me and you would have to turn diagonal a bit so this may not work for two over 6ft people. Could be retrofitted though as there is room to remove some wall.)
  • Outlet near bed
  • Diesel heater controls near bed
  • 2 storage cabinets above bed
  • Curtains and pulldown blinds
  • Pull out drawer underneath bed
BATHROOM:
  • Thetford Porta Potti Curve 550e cassette toilet
This toilet is on a slide out panel. We never used it and the previous owner assured me it was only used on rare occasions for midnight #1 emergencies in cities. It is a simple toilet with a tank that can be removed for dumping. You fill the reservoir with water, dump in some chemicals, and you're good to go.
It could be replaced with a composting toilet if you desired but for us it was not necessary as we spent most of our time near toilets or so far out in the woods that the wilderness was a better choice.
  • storage behind/beside the toilet to store toilet paper, wipes, cleaning supplies, etc.
CAB AREA:
  • Custom sun shields
  • Custom Covercraft seat covers (these were made for a different model Sprinter so they do not fit the sides perfectly. They are snug and work well but are not a perfect fit.)
  • built in Apple lightning plugin for phone connection (radio is Bluetooth but this is more stable and charges)
KNOWN PROBLEMS:
  • Passenger mirror is cracked (can send photo). Still usable and can be adjusted. It never bothered me in 6 months of driving.
  • Roof fan crank knob is missing. I twisted a screw into the threads and simply use a screwdriver to turn it. Fan works great!
  • water pump has a pin prick leak. It's honestly barely enough to notice but just to be safe rather than the drops getting on the vinyl plank I keep the trash can under the pump.
  • the LVP flooring has had to endure tons of hiking trips and rainy days. A few spots have noticeable seam movement or wear. They still look great from distance but up close they're not pristine. None of the planks are coming up or shifting though so it's still a healthy and easy to clean floor!
  • one of the LED ceiling lights will go out (can send photo). I think it must be an electrical connection right at the light but I'm not familiar with electrical work. Sometimes it is on and sometimes it is not. It doesn't flicker thankfully.
  • few tiny rust spots on exterior (can send photo). Cosmetic and surface issue only and I have occasionally touched them up with paint.
  • Outlet by dinette does not currently work. Previous owner bought the parts to fix but I do not know how and we never needed it.
  • Driver side window roll down button is broken. It works but it is finicky. The window roll down itself is fine. Just the button.
  • small paint cracking where rear exterior ladder is drilled into the door.
  • sliding window screen is beginning to tear in one corner (can send photo)
  • one rear reflector was broken and removed (can send photo)
SOME FINAL NOTES:
  • The diesel heater works VERY WELL and is an amazing little unit. The van is insulated so it holds heat very well. With the curtains drawn and running the diesel heater it gets TOASTY in there quickly!
  • The van drives very smoothly and does have cruise control to keep things easy on long stretches.
  • it drives very comfortably at or under 75mph. It can certainly hit higher mph as I often did to pass slow moving traffic but it rides smoothly and still quiet and low ish rpms at under 75mph.
SUMMARY:
This van was a part of some amazing memories for my wife and I. We loved driving it, living in it, taking pictures of it, and telling all of our friends about it to make them jealous! We visited probably over 20 national parks and more than that in state parks and public lands.
If you any questions at all do not hesitate to dm me! We are based in coastal Delaware and I would be willing to drive it to you depending on the distance and agreement/interest on a sale.
We're about 1.5 hours from BWI and DC area airports if you live in another area and wish to fly out. I would be willing to meet you near the metro areas if necessary as I have friends who live there.
Thanks so much for looking and I wish you the best on your van shopping journey!

2023.05.25 14:57 RFC2001 Rebooking Every WWE PPV from WrestleMania 1 - WrestleMania 40 - Part 37 (Long)

Unforgiven 2004 (Raw)
Date: 12/9/04
Location: Rose Garden, Portland, Oregon
Shelton Benjamin vs Edge
(After SummerSlam, Edge explains his actions. Edge says that since he’s came back, the WWE universe haven’t appreciated him, took him for granted and he doesn’t need them or their heroes like Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Shawn Michaels etc, all he needs is himself and himself only. Benjamin attacks Edge for betraying him and challenges him to this match which Edge accepts. Edge uses heel tactics to win.)
WWE World Tag Team Championship:
Eugene & William Regal (c) vs La Resistance
Intercontinental Championship:
Chris Jericho (c) vs Kane
(Kane wins a #1 Contender’s Match against Shelton Benjamin thanks to Edge to earn this match against Y2J. Kane promises to win the Intercontinental Championship since it’s been a while since he’s held some gold and Jericho promises to rise to the challenge in order to remain champion. Kane wins the championship clean after delivering a Tombstone Piledriver to Jericho.)
Women’s Championship:
Trish Stratus (c) vs Victoria
Shawn Michaels vs Christian w/Tyson Tomko
(Christian and Tyson Tomko attack Shawn Michaels when he returns. Christian says that he looked up to Shawn as a kid but in the last 2 years since returning, he’s become a phony and isn’t the Shawn Michaels he grew up loving. He says he even loved the fact that he screwed Bret Hart who’s Canadian just like him but says that Shawn Michaels is dead. Michaels says he found god and he’s a better person which is why he isn’t the guy Christian loved. Michaels then says Christian is going to get what’s coming to him for picking a fight with him, he’s going to kick his teeth down his throat and will enjoy doing it. Michaels wins clean after a Sweet Chin Music in a very good 15 minute match.)
World Heavyweight Championship:
Chris Benoit (c) vs Randy Orton
(Randy Orton wins a Battle Royal on Raw the night after SummerSlam to earn this opportunity against Chris Benoit. Orton says that he’s the future of this company who has a desire and destiny to do one thing in the WWE, win championships. Benoit says Orton is a talented kid who comes from a very well respected family but he’s also an arrogant little punk who’s going to need lessons off him before getting to where he wants to be. In a classic main event, Randy Orton RKO’s Benoit out of nowhere and pins him 1,2…3 to become the new World Heavyweight Champion, the youngest World Champion in history. After the match, Evolution come down and celebrate with him as Unforgiven draws to a close.)
Note:
(Evolution don’t turn on Randy Orton the night after this event and the Legend Killer isn’t turning face, the group will remain for a little longer although Triple H is of course jealous that Orton’s the champion and he isn’t.)
No Mercy 2004 (SmackDown)
Date: 3/10/04
Location: Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey
Cruiserweight Championship:
Chavo Guerrero (c) vs Spike Dudley
WWE Tag Team Championship:
The Basham Brothers (c) vs The Dudley Boyz vs Rey Mysterio & Rob Van Dam
Texas Bullrope Match for the United States Championship:
John Cena (c) vs JBL w/Orlando Jordan
(After SummerSlam, JBL wins a #1 Contender’s Match against Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam to earn this match against John Cena for the United States Championship. JBL says that he doesn’t want this to be a normal match and challenges the Dr. of Thuganomics to a first ever Texas Bullrope Match! Cena accepts, saying he can’t wait to beat the hell out of Bradshaw who’s been running his mouth since disgustingly betraying his partner a few months back. In the build up, JBL recruits Orlando Jordan as his personal assistant, and him and Jordan beat up Cena. On the go home show, Cena beats down Jordan with a Bullrope and warns JBL that’s him at No Mercy. In a bloody and brutal contest, Orlando Jordan distracts John Cena before Bradshaw capitalizes, hits Cena with a Clothesline from Hell in pins him to win the United States Championship!)
#1 Contender’s Match for the WWE Championship:
Booker T vs Kurt Angle
(Kurt Angle returns from injury and says he’s back for one reason, the WWE Championship. Angle says that he wants the winner of the main event at Survivor Series because he’s next in line. Booker T interrupts and says Angle should get to the back of the line, he’s next and teases a face turn. Theodore Long announces that both men will compete at No Mercy and the winner will face the WWE Champion at Survivor Series. Booker T turns fully face in the build up and the fans get behind him. He says Kurt Angle sucks and he’s going to beat that sucka at No Mercy. Angle says he’ll be breaking Booker’s ankle at No Mercy for making fun of him while he also punches his ticket to the WWE Championship match at Survivor Series. In a highly competitive match, Kurt Angle wins after forcing Booker T to submit to the Angle Lock.)
WWE Championship:
Eddie Guerrero (c) vs The Undertaker
(After SummerSlam, The Undertaker says Paul Heyman no longer controls him and he’s got one full focus now… The WWE Championship! Taker challenges Guerrero to one more match after what transpired at SummerSlam. Eddie accepts because he’s a fighting champion and wants to face his demons like he’s faced other demons in his past. Guerrero tells Undertaker that he can try and play mind games with him all he wants, he won’t ever be as good when it comes to mind games and tactics as him. In the build up, Taker plays mind games with the Gong to try and get into Guerrero’s head but it doesn’t work, with Eddie saying he’s no longer going to be intimidated like he was at the start when Taker went after his title. Taker then surrounds the ring with druids and Tombstone’s Latino Heat on the go home show episode of SmackDown. Eddie and Taker have a 20 minute classic with Latino Heat finding a way to retain his WWE Championship. No Mercy draws to a close with Eddie Guerrero celebrating with his title at the top of the ramp although his celebration is cut short. Kurt Angle attacks Eddie from behind, puts in the Angle Lock and injures Eddie’s ankle. No Mercy ends with Kurt Angle holding up the WWE Championship.)
Taboo Tuesday 2004 (Raw)
Date: 19/10/04
Location: Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
WWE World Tag Team Championship:
Eugene & William Regal (c) vs Rhyno & Tajiri
Women’s Championship:
Trish Stratus (c) vs Molly Holly
Intercontinental Championship:
Kane (c) vs Chris Jericho
(Chris Jericho invokes his rematch clause for the Intercontinental Championship and he promises to regain it from Kane. Kane says just like at Unforgiven, Jericho will face his wrath. The fans choose a stipulation with 3 choices and they choose a Steel Cage Match! Kane retains via escaping the cage.)
No Holds Barred Match:
Shelton Benjamin vs Edge
(This feud continues after Unforgiven with Benjamin still extremely upset at what Edge has done to him recently. The fans choose these two to participate in a No Holds Barred match. Shelton Benjamin wins and gets revenge to close out the feud.)
Shawn Michaels vs Christian w/Tyson Tomko
(Christian and Tomko continue going after Michaels, claiming his win at Unforgiven was a fluke and he’s still a phony. Christian challenges Michaels to a rematch and The Showstopper accepts, promising to end this for good. Michaels wins again to end the feud.)
World Heavyweight Championship:
Randy Orton (c) vs Chris Benoit vs Triple H
(After losing the World Heavyweight Championship, Chris Benoit wants his rematch which is granted to him. However, Eric Bischoff says someone else will be in this match… Triple H! Orton and The Game are shocked and don’t want to fight one another but Bischoff tells them it’s happening whether they like it or not. Orton and Triple H promise no matter what happens, Evolution will remain since the title being in the group is fine regardless of who the champion is. Benoit says that’s nonsense and if one of them could, they’d stab the other in the back out of jealousy when it comes to the World Championship. In this match, Orton and Triple H tease animosity after a lack of communication. Chris Benoit goes to hit Orton over the head with a chair but Orton moves and Benoit hits Triple H instead. Orton then RKO’s Benoit who rolls out the ring and the Legend Killer pins Triple H to retain the World Heavyweight Championship!)
Note:
(On the Raw after Taboo Tuesday, Triple H tells Randy Orton that he’d have done the same if he was the champion and is glad the title is still in the hands of Evolution. The group isn’t splitting up yet.)
Survivor Series 2004
Date: 14/11/04
Location: Gund Arena, Cleveland, Ohio
Intercontinental Championship:
Kane (c) vs Shelton Benjamin
Women’s Championship:
Trish Stratus (c) vs Lita (By Disqualification)
(The same match as in real life, Lita gets disqualified very quickly and breaks Trish’s nose.)
Survivor Series Tag Team Match:
Team Cena (John Cena, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio & The Big Show) vs Team JBL (JBL, Orlando Jordan, Carlito & The Basham Brothers)
(Sole survivors:Cena & Booker T)
Cruiserweight Championship:
Chavo Guerrero (c) vs Paul London
The Undertaker vs Snitsky
(Snitsky comes down to the ring and lays down an open challenge to anyone in the back who thinks they’ve got the guts to face him. His challenge is answered by… The Undertaker! Taker beats Snitsky in a 5 minute contest.)
WWE Championship:
Eddie Guerrero (c) vs Kurt Angle
(After No Mercy, Eddie Guerrero says that he can’t wait to get his hands on Kurt Angle after being attacked by him at No Mercy. Angle explains his actions and says it isn’t just because Eddie’s got what he wants which is the WWE Championship, he also despises him. Angle says that while being out injured, it’s made him sick watching Guerrero hold the WWE Championship and bring it into disrepute with some of his lying and cheating tactics which weirdly entertains the fans. Angle says Eddie won’t be able to Lie, Cheat and Steal his way to victory against him at Survivor Series. Eddie responds by saying it’s worked against many and it can work against him if necessary. He also says Angle won’t take away what he’s worked hard for in the calendar year. Eddie goes into this with an injured ankle thanks to Angle. Angle targets that fragile area before locking in the Angle Lock right in the middle of the ring in a 25 minute classic and it’s enough for Kurt Angle to make Eddie Guerrero tap out to win the WWE Championship!)
Team Benoit (Chris Benoit, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Eugene & William Regal) vs Team Evolution (Randy Orton, Triple H, Ric Flair, Batista & Edge)
(Chris Benoit continues his crusade against Evolution and challenges them to a match at Survivor Series. Evolution accepts, saying they’ll recruit someone and Benoit can try recruit 4 other guys to team with him although they doubt it because not many have the guts to take them on. Evolution recruits Edge, saying he’s impressed them a lot recently. Benoit promises to not only recruit four other men, but to show even more cracks in Evolution after his team beats them. Benoit gets Eugene, William Regal, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels to team with him! Chris Jericho is left 2 on 1 against Randy Orton & Triple H but he overcomes the odds to win the match for Team Benoit, last eliminating Randy Orton. After the match, Triple H, Batista and Flair help Orton up but then Triple H Pedigrees Orton! Evolution give Orton the beating of his life and Survivor Series ends with Triple H holding up the World Heavyweight Championship!)
(Sole Survivor:Chris Jericho)
Notes:
(Randy Orton isn’t turning face, he’s going to be a tweener who’s still only in it for himself.)
(Lita wins the Women’s Championship in the main event of Raw on December 6th, 2004.)
Armageddon 2004 (SmackDown)
Date: 12/12/04
Location: Gwinnett Center, Duluth, Georgia
WWE Tag Team Championship:
Rey Mysterio & Rob Van Dam (c) vs The Dudley Boyz
Cruiserweight Championship:
Paul London (c) vs Chavo Guerrero
John Cena vs Orlando Jordan
(Cena wants revenge on Orlando Jordan for costing him the United States Championship at No Mercy and then in his rematch on an episode of SmackDown so Teddy Long grants him this match.)
United States Championship:
JBL (c) w/Viscera vs The Big Show
(The Big Show wants gold so he targets JBL and the United States Championship. With his buddy Orlando Jordan tied up against John Cena, a terrified JBL wants back up so he hires Viscera to be his bodyguard. Big Show says Bradshaw can hide behind whoever he wants, nothing and no one is stopping him from regaining the title he never got a rematch for after WrestleMania. There’s a ref bump in this match in which Viscera, The Basham Brothers & Orlando Jordan all attack The Big Show. JBL then delivers a Clothesline from Hell before the referee then recovers and makes the 3 count for JBL to retain.)
Booker T vs Carlito
WWE Championship:
Kurt Angle (c) vs Eddie Guerrero vs The Undertaker
(After Survivor Series, an injured Eddie Guerrero says that he’s invoking his rematch clause whether anyone in management, doctors or Kurt Angle like it or not. Angle says that’s fine, he’ll just injure Guerrero’s other ankle. With Eddie being touch and go, Teddy Long says he wants assurances that Angle defends the title at Armageddon so adds to this match whether it’s either a triple threat or a one-on-one contest… The Undertaker! Angle is furious and demands Teddy remove Undertaker from this match but his request is denied. On the SmackDown before Armageddon, Eddie reveals that he’s cleared to compete and promises regain the title at Armageddon. The Undertaker says both men will fall to The Phenom and he’ll reclaim his yard after 2 years without the gold meanwhile Angle says he’s going to break both men’s ankles, spit in their faces and walk out with the gold. In a thrilling contest, Eddie Guerrero delivers a Frog Splash to The Undertaker but Angle then comes in quickly to prevent Guerrero from winning, delivers an Angle Slam to Latino Heat and pins him to retain the WWE Championship! Armageddon draws to a close with Angle reigning supreme.)
And that’s part 37 in the history books! I hope you guys liked it and loved the idea of me stalling on Evolution turning on Randy Orton. I’ll be back very soon for part 38 where we’ll enter 2005 and see the end of Evolution, new stars born at WrestleMania 21 and the first ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Stay tuned!

2023.05.25 03:55 PresentComputer4097 Step Van Pros & Cons

I've just completed my first week of driving a step van after having spent over a year driving the sprinters and more importantly avoiding the step van training for the last 6 months.
I wanted to share some thoughts about what it's been like and what I've noticed are the major differences between the the 2.
I've had both residential and commercial/business routes so I have a different opinion on both while driving a step van.
1) If you are an excellent regular van driver then your transition to step van will be very easy. Why? Because the biggest challenge of driving a step van is maintaining your spatial awareness at all times and being mindful of the length and width of the van.
2) The change in your field of vision by sitting up so high is remarkable. I feel as if I can see any potential danger or hazard ahead and have an adequate reaction time.
3) Having space to properly organize my totes and overflow to my OCDish standards along with always being able to walk down the aisle without any impediment is a great feeling.
4) While delivering in residential areas it's much easier getting in and out of the van through the passenger door because the steps reach much lower to the ground so my knees are not being destroyed.
5) Driving with both doors open while it's hot as hell has kept me from absolutely baking in this heat. Also I love being able to deliver and enter the van from either side without opening/sliding a door.
6) The ride is EXTREMELY bumpy and rough. You will feel every pothole, divet and imperfection on the road and your entire van will rattle.
7) No mentor because of the van vibration issue. You'll have 30 violations within an hour if you were logged in.
8) The steering is definitely much stiffer and requires a much greater effort to turn.
9) Step Vans should only be used for commercial and business routes because of the process of shifting the van into park and applying the parking break is somewhat more tedious than in a sprinter.
10) No radio. I love my music man 😫
11) If given the choice I'd never go back to driving a sprinter. My delivery experience is much more efficient in a step van.
12) So far my route size hasn't changed much, I just have more space. We'll see what happens later I guess.🤔
13) The AC is terrible but you'll be hopping in and out so much it doesn't really matter.
14) More respected on the road, not being tailgated and people get out of my way.
