2023.03.26 11:40 GYAAARRRR A debate about tipping…

I’ve had this debate with several friends/family members with very mixed results so now I want to bring it to Reddit.
The question: Should I really be tipping a percentage of the bill?
A bit of background: I worked as a servehost for several months back in the early 2000’s. On slow days, it was barely worth the drive in only to make $20-30 for 6 hours of my time. I didn’t do it long because I hated the inconsistency of the pay.
My stance:
I believe tipping a flat rate is better than a percentage of the meal total. Usually that rate is $10. I might fluctuate a bit for fantastic service but $10 is usually my go to. I figure the server dealt with me for an hour of their time, they deserve at least $10 for the simple task of bringing me my food/drinks. That means if I’m having breakfast at Waffle House and the total comes out to $7, instead of getting $1.40 for a 20% tip, they get ~7x that. I only revert to a percentage tip if we have a larger party (just as most restaurants implement anyway).
This works out to be in the servers favor in 99% of the cases since I’m rarely going over $50, even in nicer restaurants. BUT (here’s where the debate comes in) this doesn’t really accommodate for ridiculously over priced places.
The situation:
My wife and I decided to have breakfast at our hotel’s restaurant in Las Vegas. We were greeted, seated, served, and left in less than 45 minutes. We saw our server 3 times (greeting, order, and bill). Our total was $55 for some avocado toast and an eggs Benedict. I tipped $10. This was NOT okay with my wife. She insisted I leave the correct amount for 20% ($11). I made the change to the bill without much hesitation because what’s a dollar to me in this case? But I had to know why this was such a big deal.
Her argument points:
1: The server at this (or any higher priced) restaurant is EXPECTING more money because of the higher prices in the restaurant. They make their personal budget based on those higher wages. It could mean the difference between making/not making rent one month!
2: We go out to eat for a dining experience, if we are going to be cheap, we should just stay home.
My counter argument:
1: If the servers are so tight on money that my $1 swings them into homelessness, they have other problems. I can’t try to consider the financial status of everyone around me.
2: I feel I’m being generous considering a tip is supposed to be commensurate of the service received, not the food I ate. The cook isn’t seeing any tip money. I feel $10 is a totally reasonable amount to expect for essentially picking up the food and handing to me.
So Reddit, what do you think?

2023.03.26 11:39 Mr2Dollars Can the power supply hinder the performance of the gpu?

I was wondering this since I’ve been troblueshooting all day in order to let resident evil 4 remake work as intended, I’ve tried everything from reinstalling both game and drivers and lowering the graphic quality to the lowest but not matter what, I always get something around 20-40 fps with the gpu sitting at 50-40 % utilisation
At this point could it be that there’s no much power that the gpu can absorb so it under volt in order to not crash the system?
My specs are the following:
CPU: INTEL I5 11400F
GPU: INTEL ARC A750
RAM: 2x8 GB GSKILLZ DDR4 3200 MHZ
MOBO: ASROCK H510M HDV R2.0
PS: COOLERMASTER MASTERWATT ELITE WHITE 2.0 450 W
N.B: Drivers are updated and resizable bar is enabled, this behaviour so far only happend with days gone and re4re .

2023.03.26 11:39 LordNikky AITA for being hurt that the girl (f18) I'm (m18) currently dating made out with someone else?

tl;dr: she told me I was allowed to date other girls beside her because she has some issues that might lead to me being hurt, but I have already fallen in love with her, she told me she did too. I accepted because there was another girl I was talking to that seemed nice but we only texted so far. now the girl I'm dating made out with the same person on a party on friday and saturday. She tells me it's fine because she wouldn't have a problem with me doing the same thing and doesn't understand that I'm hurt. AITA?
So I've been dating this girl, let's call her Liza, since 1 month now. we went on 6 dates so far and it was great, I noticed feelings on the second date and on the third date I fell in love. She told me she fell in love with me too, but she told me that she has commitment issues. That's the reason she offered me to also date other girls so I don't commit 100% to her in order to not get hurt. I accepted because I'm sick of mentally instable girls, all my exgirlfriends had serious issues which always lead to me being completely depressed. So I got back in contact with a girl I led down because of the girl I'm dating, but we only texted a bit and can't meet up and get to know each other because of our schedules.
Anyways, this friday she went on a party with her best friend and she told me yesterday that she made out with another girl, also touching boobs etc. At first I was shocked, but I quickly said to myself that I'm allowed to do the same thing (although I never was the guy to just make out with girls on parties), but today she told me that she did the same thing again with the same person on yesterdays party. I told her that I'm hurt and that I don't get why she tells me how much she likes and wants me when she does shit like that, and now she doesn't understand why I'm hurt.
Am I just being dramatic? Is it my fault for agreeing to her offer? AITA?

2023.03.26 11:34 Gloomy_Ad_5843 India rape Capital fallacy 2

Reason: why India is not the rape capital of the world.
1.: Media reporting standards are not the same**
India's media reports things differently from media in other parts of the world. Media reports in various parts of the world have themes. American media focus a lot on race issues. Middle East media focuses a lot on sectarian issues. Indian media focuses a lot on gender issues. It would be faulty to not recognize the themes and blindly use media as a barometer.
Crimes get a disproportionate share of India's media reporting. Top news sources in the US, don't report rapes in the way India does. For instance, 25 women in the US were raped/assaulted in the time I took to write this comment (about 30 mins). You wouldn't likely read about any of these 25 cases in the media.
When a woman was sexually assaulted in an Uber taxi in Delhi, it became a major news and the government quickly reacted. But, such crimes involving Uber is fairly routine in the US.
Sources :
http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/12/16/least-two-women-who-reported-sexual-assaults-boston-sunday-were-using-uber-police-say/cFHpgzcfIoBYiTfWgOqYOK/story.html
http://abc7news.com/325011/
http://www.whosdrivingyou.org/rideshare-incidents.html#SexualAssaults
In the US and Europe, such rape stories would come in local media and just move out of national attention. You probably didn't even come across it. US local governments didn't pursue Uber with the same vigor. Indian media selectively picks up a case and rallies around that. This creates a distorted reality.
The sad truth is that it is not India vs. US. It is that women get raped and it doesn't become a big news. See this as a global problem.
2.Second fact: India's rape rate is not the highest in the world. Not even close
According to the 2010 UN data on rape, the rapes per 100,000 people in India is 0.4 and 27.3 in USA. Going by these statistics, rape rate in USA is a whopping 6825% of India, so much for the "rape culture" in India.
Sources :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/top-5-countries-highest-rates-rape-1434355
http://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/Crime/Rapes/Per-capita
If you don't like the statistics, construct better ones. Figure out what factor you want to measure that is not covered in the reports from world bodies. Construct scientifically accepted surveys. Get to the root of the problem with logic. Use your stuff between the ears, instead of passing judgements with hot gas.
Under reporting of Rapes
Now I know the next thing you'll say is that rapes are under reported in India and it's true, but the matter of fact is that rapes are under reported everywhere in the world, including USA. More than 70% of rapes go under reported in USA.
Sources :
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/21/rape-study-report-america-us_n_4310765.html
https://cavatus.wordpress.com/2012/03/24/sweden-a-raped-country/
Now for the sake of argument, let's give you the benefit of doubt and assume that only 5% of the rapes in India are reported and 95% cases go unreported. Also assume that 100% of rapes in USA are reported.
By that logic, the real rape rate in India will be 0.4 x 20 = 8. Now let us go further and double that too, we get 8 x 2 = 16, which is still way less than 27.3 (the rape rate in USA).
Therefore, even if you multiply the rape rate of India by 40, it still doesn't matches USA. This proves that India is a much safer country for women compared to USA.
In cultures across the world, rape carries a stigma. Because, most of the rapes happen with people who are close to the woman. Thus, there is a strong social pressure against reporting. This basic fact is lost on the many who are giving their uneducated comments on the issue.
The number of recorded rapes in India is certainly a substantial underestimate, but even if we take five times—or ten times—that figure, the corrected and enlarged estimates of rapes would still be substantially lower in India than in the US, the UK, Sweden, or South Africa (even with the assumption that there is no underreporting in these other countries).
-Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen.
Do you want to discuss rapes or engage in stereotypes?
Here is a simple question for those want to discuss this issue:
Are you interested in creating solutions for making women safe across race, creed, class and country?
Do you want to pick up some news item to justify your own stereotypes about a country?
If you belong to the former group, let us constructively engage in a debate on the solutions. If you belong to the latter group, you are not the solution, but the problem.
In summary, this is plainly a media distortion where one country reports rapes with more vigor than an another country. This leads to blind stereotyping that destroys people's lives & careers for no fault of their own.
Instead of getting into such faulty stereotyping without any statistical evidence, let us as humans figure out ways we can make world safer for women. Because, they are getting raped all over the world at an alarming rate.
You still believe India has a "rape culture" and that USA is a very safe country for women?

Even more data :

Rape Data on India
Reported Rapes
A. Based on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) data from 2012:
24,923 reported rapes in India, or 4.26 reported rapes for every 1,00,000 women
This places India at 85 out of 121 countries.

Unreported Rapes
B. Based on a survey conducted by UN Women:
India reported 8.5 rapes for every 100 women over their lifetimes, based on the answers they gave household-level surveyors.
The question "if the women had experienced sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner or any other person" placed India at 39 out of 99 countries.
Ten per cent of women in India reported having experienced sexual violence by their husbands during their lifetime. In the UN Women database, this places India at 43 out of 86 countries with comparable data.

Rape Conviction Rate
According to the Guardian, just 7% of reported rapes in the U.K. resulted in convictions during 2011-12. In Sweden, the conviction rate is as low as 10%. France had a conviction rate of 25% in 2006.
Poor India, a developing nation with countless challenges, managed an impressive 24.2% conviction rate in 2012. That’s thanks to the efforts of a lot of good people — police, lawyers, victims and their families — working heroically with limited resources.

2023.03.26 11:33 scarab456 Do grand strategy games really provide grand strategy?

Do you have a love/hate relationship with any kinds of game? For me it is grand strategy.
I've played a bunch of grand strategy games because I find myself drawn the interesting premise, maps, and settings. Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universal, Stellaris, Total war games, Galactic Civilizations, Civilization, Endless Space, the list goes on. I end up very disillusioned by how some mechanics are implemented. I tend to do very light reading on the game, play the tutorial (if there is one), and try to understand individual parts while not failing.
It seem like every time, regardless of game, there's the tendency to teach you a few core systems very well and the others very poorly. Like trying to understand how functional and strong your divisions are in Hearts of Iron 4. There's a glut of stats and composition combinations for troops, equipment, and support, but the game doesn't really give you a way test and get meaningful feedback. It's weird to see troops losing and not understand why. It is even stranger when you see your troops winning and you don't understand why. It's not even a case of imperfect information; many games focus more on outcome and less on the 'why'. You get weird interactions where you find that you've mastered this system well but when it interacts with others you feel very lost.
I'll accept losing, I'm fine with games where I fail, so long as I learn something from it. But grand strategy doesn't seem to do that very well. The time to start games, the information to collection and process doesn't lend itself well to readability. Even with pause buttons and extensive UIs. I end up having to go outside of the game to learn the game better. And I don't mean looking up optimal builds, I mean I literally find better descriptions and examples that in-game tool tips fail to describe. A lot of time I find that many stats, meters, and system don't matter. There are attributes that are very fixed or change so little and so infrequently that they shouldn't be apart of your decision making. You've actually learned the game wrong. These leads to the natural progression of learning from communities and various guides most the time it devolves to focusing on 'meta' decisions. Not just for the sake of being effective, but also to save time and the brain drain of numbers. For example I mean stuff like, "Don't build x, they're good in theory and in theory only", "Cav is trash 90% of the time, it's a trap", "Sell/deconstruct all of a,b,c first turn", "Just kite", "Give up X but never Y because the AI will waste tons of resources on Y" or other reductions that are effective but takes all the strategy development out of your hands because learning what's ineffective is so time consuming and complex.
Grand strategy games have lopsided levels of fun. It is like there is a decay in quality, the further you are away from combat the worse the game gets. Total War combat is fun, logistics are not. Decisions of supply lines and resources don't become less important, just that decisions end up less meaningful. Just is fun to send your troops to flank on the battlefield and break their center. Now back to measuring travel distances and trade administration. Optimal play doesn't bother me, lack of strategy in it does. In Total War is is upkeep to make bigger and more numerous armies more expense and order for provinces that dictate how well you control a given populace in an area. Outside of custom setting or easy difficulties there is no strategy to managing these; you are either properly keep order high enough to keep the area functional or you're giving it up. You're either properly funding your army or you aren't. When you aren't it becomes a nuisance that you can't ignore. Lack of order and improper funding will harry every other aspects of gameplay and solving it isn't fun or dramatic, it's a long tedious series of back tracking forces, and deconstruction/reconstruction, and waiting, so much waiting. It ends up teaching players that if you don't want to deal with a hundred micro-decisions again that derails you from parts of the game you enjoy, follow the optimal designs already tried and test by communities. Trying and testing your own isn't fun.
Maybe grand strategy games aren't for me? Or am I missing the trees for the forest or something? Because it is so strange that I've spent so much time on these games, had moments of fun, but feel no urge to revisit any of them. Does anyone else experience this with grand strategy? Or any other kind of game genre or a specific game?

2023.03.26 11:32 Ecstatic_Answer_4901 I'm the temporary friend

I'm a relatively closed off person, I have social anxiety and I suspect I'm autistic. It's very hard for me to find people I really vibe with and am able to be close to and I do best in one on one situations. I can't figure out how to exist in a group situation for the life of me, I usually just end up being ignored. When I do become friends with someone we end up being really close, usually for a fair amount of time. I've had 4 people I can call best friends in my lifetime (I'm 21) and every single time the same thing has happened - we usually become friends at a time when they either don't have many people around or are considered "outcasts" in some way. We have our friendship, everything is good and then they start making other friends, going out with other people, getting into friendgroups and I end up being iced out or downright ghosted. I have no issue with my friends having other friends, I'm always happy to get to know the other people in my friends' lives but because of my aforementioned issues I am never able to fully integrate myself. As a result I get replaced completely, people stop initiating or don't responding to me intitating contact, and even when I gently try and approach the subject in order to try and remedy things I get told that I'm overreacting and there's no such thing. This is currently happening with someone I met at the beginning of high school, so almost 8 years ago, and I have no idea what to do. They didn't really have any friends and we were really close. Now we go to different universities even though we live in the same city. When they started making friends I just became a background character and now they won't even respond to me. This is making me feel like a person with no value. I really don't know what to do.

2023.03.26 11:31 Time-Profession6258 How does the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a Member of Parliament raise concerns about the intersection of justice and politics in India, and why should it prompt a sense of shock among the Indian populace?

Sometimes it helps to allow things to cool down and observe the cold facts dispassionately. We will apply the same principles while examining the disqualification of a key opposition leader. We've avoided using his name to keep out political bias.
  1. Leader R makes an election speech in 2019. He pans leader M who is usually addressed by his surname - even by his followers.
  2. Leader R reels out 3 persons with the same surname and asks how all thieves have the same M surname. 3. An MLA with the same surname files a defamation case citing that R has sullied the entire community. 4. MLA seeks a stay on his own petition nearly 3 years after he filed the case.
  3. MLA gets the stay order vacated a year later. And on Feb 27th, the trial resumes under a new judge.
  4. Judge pronounces verdict in March, dishing out a MAXIMUM sentence citing criminal defamation.
Anyone who reads the speech will know it was a political speech attacking leader M. At no point in time was there an attempt to demean a community. And yet, leader R was sentenced to a punishment of 2 years of imprisonment.
If the intention was to punish leader R for slander, he could have been given a rap on the knuckles and a light 6-month jail term. Instead, he was given a 2-year punishment. Just when you wonder about the reasons for the severity, you notice an interesting coincidence.
As per Indian law, any MP, MLA, or MLC who is convicted of a crime and given a minimum of 2 years in jail loses membership of the House with immediate effect. Within 24 hours, Leader R gets disqualified as a Member of Parliament. And runs the risk of being barred from contesting elections for 8 years.
Forget your politics for a moment. Doesn't the above case reek of diabolical politics and not law?
There are hundreds of politicians walking around scot-free. And we get an opposition leader disqualified over a case of mild slander at best? Doesn't it feel absurd?
Think of the many times the name R has been equated with Pappu. If someone who shares the name R files a defamation case against a key leader of the ruling party for sullying all R's, do you think any court will sentence the ruling party leader to 2 years of imprisonment? This is why we feel the episode that has played out is sheer politics and has got nothing to do with law.
We are all for politics, but this move has crossed all previous norms of decency. This is why most independent-minded people in India are shocked beyond words.

2023.03.26 11:30 dimsummami Ex is mentioning my name in his autobiography to apply to police departments without my consent. Am I allowed decline talking to background investigators?

Context: I am from LA county (socal) and he’s from Orange County (also socal). He’s applying to different departments in his county. Me (24F) and my ex (26M) broke up over a year ago on bad terms I told him that I want to cut off contact from him. He respected that boundary up until recently that he notified me (and my boyfriend via discord cause I made a new account. I didn’t know what his username was). that he will be using my name as a reference for his autobiography in order to become a police officer. He’s never asked me if I could be used as a reference but the way he worded it made it sound like he’s notifying me out of courtesy. This never sat right with me ever since.
I am not familiar with the application process to become a law enforcement officer, so I wasn’t aware that background investigators may contact me in the future. This made feel uncomfortable. He never gave me a straight answer when I asked him if it’s even necessary to include ex girlfriends in his application. I’m leaning towards not speaking with investigators solely because of how volatile the relationship was and I do not want to be a part of this.

2023.03.26 11:30 idkhan101 Detecting pieces on a Smart Chessboard

So I'm trying to make a smart chess board that lights up when a piece is picked up and shows all possible moves for that specific piece. I also want it to be able to tell if a piece is put in the wrong place when starting the game.
In order to do so I need a way to recognise each piece. The best idea I have so far is to have a unique resistance for each piece and have it somehow connect two connections on the board. That's where the problem comes in. I need to figure out a way to connect the piece to the circuit without it being visible to the player. Any ideas on how I can pull this off?

2023.03.26 11:30 godisanesp-er Here’s an alternate universe fanfic I’m writing inspired by Berserk 1997.

In this version, Casca Is the leader of the Hawks, and Griffith is female and Guts is much stronger but also much younger.
Title: "The Black Swordsman" FADE IN: INT. CASTLE MIDLAND - NIGHT
We see a group of armored mercenaries gathered in a dimly lit room.
CASCA: Listen up! We have a mission tonight. Our target is the Black Swordsman. He's been causing trouble for the midland army, and we've been ordered to bring him in. Questions?
The men shake their heads in silence.
CASCA: Good. Let's move out.
The group exits the room and make their way down a spiral staircase. They reach the ground floor of the tower and step outside, where they latee find themselves in a dense forest.
Suddenly, a figure emerges from the shadows. It's the Black Swordsman.
GUTS: What do you want?
CASCA: We've been ordered to bring you in, come peacefully.
GUTS: And if I say no?
Casca draws her sword, and a group charges at Guts, he easily takes them down one by one with his oversized sword. Casca, the last one standing, draws her sword and prepares for a one-on-one fight with Guts.
CASCA: Just remember, you had your chance to come out of this alive.
GUTS: I have no interest in small talk. Turn back now, I would hate to raise my sword against a woman.
CASCA: “…!”
Casca charges at Guts, but he swiftly dodges landing a blow against her sword, causing it to break in two and quickly following with a feint attack.
GUTS: You're lucky I didn't use the sharp end.
A group of the hawks start to charge at guts, but Casca waves them off looking up at Guts, impressed by his skill and prowess.
CASCA: Who are you?
Casca is left speechless, they stare into each other's eyes.
CASCA: I…
GUTS:
A familiar javelin lands between.
Griffith is seen with her helmet.
GRIFFITH: Will you put up your sword?

2023.03.26 11:30 Time-Profession6258 How does the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a Member of Parliament raise concerns about the intersection of justice and politics in India, and why should it prompt a sense of shock among the Indian populace?

2023.03.26 11:28 warpzooone Playlist not playing entirely

Recently made a pretty long playlist full of various songs that I play in the background while I'm on my computer doing other things. I've run into a problem where, when shuffling the playlist, YouTube will just pick out maybe 6 random songs, and then just play those 6 songs on loop in the same order.
Is there any way to stop this or work around it or something it's just kind of really irritating. Thank you in advance
