2023.06.01 18:01 LoLusta How to reduce the size of a PDF file?

I've seen pdf books having 200 pages — all well formatted, multicolor and containing vector graphics — under 2 MB!
On the other hand, a simple 10 page word document containing just text and nothing else that I create and export as PDF goes around 500 KB.
Similar PDF documents — created in and exported from Word, LibreOffice Writer and Inkscape — have significantly different file sizes. And I didn't embed fonts in either of them.
I understand that the size of a PDF containing image files can be reduced by compressing the image and reducing its resolution. But what about PDFs that do not have images?
I've observed that printing to Microsoft Print to PDF generally gives smaller file than exporting Excel files directly into PDF
My questions are:
  1. Is there any way to analyse in depth a PDF file created from any source and reduce its size to such an extent that further size reduction is technically impossible?
  2. Is there any resource (book, guide, etc.) available on optimising PDF files?
  3. What are the tools available (preferably free) for such kind of advanced PDF file manipulation?

He also links the practice of "continuous awareness" more directly ( in other books, I haven't read the new one ) to the dhamma.
He claims to have suffered from severe depression which slowly cleared up after he devoted himself to this practice.

2023.06.01 18:00 Librarian-Former Things got worse when your pwBPD went to a counselor?

First mistake was probably being hopeful...but, I was genuinely encouraged when my pwBPD first started talking to a counselor...it really seemed to help them deal with some struggles right of the bat, and gave her an outlet for a lot of the issues we have faced over the years. [Caveat: my pwBPD has not been open AT ALL to the idea that BPD could be a factor in our situation, in fact blew up at me for having books on the topic and/or participating in discussions of BPD...so, I have no impression whatsoever that it's a discussion she's had with her counselor]
I was never at any of the sessions, so, I'm only experiencing this from one side...it's certainly possible that this is NOT the professional advice, but, I will reiterate what I've seen. A few visits in, I started to see a trend, initially with others, specifically childhood issues she had with her parents. According to what was conveyed, there was a focus on moving past the experiences (good), but, doing that by not taking personal responsibility for actions, but, by putting that responsibility on the other people. Outworking of this seemed to be, recognizing that she acted in some way (Anger, Outbursts, Attention Seeking, etc)...but, that the reasons for that was the way that her parents raised her, and there's nothing she could do about it b/c it was their fault.
So, I guess good in the sense of guiding her to move past things. But, bad, in the sense of taking no personal responsibility for how CURRENT actions affected people around her. Beyond that, justifying the behavior because of things that had happened in the past.
So, I had some concerns, but, I figure, counseling is always gonna be a good thing? Right? Well, then the other shoe drops.
Now, the latest is that everything related to our marriage is my fault and attributed to experiences in OUR past. I isolate or go silent to protect myself from an angry outburst...I'm to blame because I "cut her out" or "ignored her". I stop responding to texts, because they're verbally abusive and personally attacking...while clearly saying "I'm happy to carry on a civil conversation if you would like to do that"....and I'm stonewalling or gaslighting (STILL don't get that logic...but, whatevs)...I'm not "emotionally supportive" enough, and it can't possibly have to do with the fact that I've been verbally stabbed and abused so much that I'm gunshy...it's me intentionally withholding care.
I find it weirdly ironic that my pwBPD finally getting consistent counseling seems likely to lead to the end of the marriage. But, maybe that's just accelerating what was destined to happen anyways. Life comes at you fast...

I’m working on a robot project which requires some 3d printed parts. I’m looking for some printing services in tokyo. I googled and found few. But most of them are professional services and bulk types. Other ones were: 1. DMM.make : It’s good service, but kinda expensive. Feels like if I print several tiny parts that will cost me equivalent to buying a printer. Prefer not. 2. Tokyo hacker space : I need to be a member. Don’t want to, because I have all stuff except printer. 3. Fablabs : Their 3D printer don’t work.
I know I sound picky, but all I want is to print 6-7 parts once every in 4-5 months. Anybody know any good places for such services ?

The legendary, almost mythical pigment that is Quinacridone Gold, PO49.
This is the pigment in it's dry form and the process of it being hademade into a lovely watercolor paint.
It’s a shame it got discontinued but I’ve been lucky enough to still get my hands on some. The discontinuation and extinction of pigments is, unfortunately a reality. Whereas bigger industries than the art industry finds no use for it anymore, a pigment is taken out of production. Sometimes that’s because more stable and permanent alternatives are found of sometimes it’s even because of costs. A lot of pigments were taken out of (mass) production because of their toxicity. This is nowadays less common. Although cadmiums, manganese, cobalts and other modern pigments might be still more harmful than others, it’s not as pressing an issue as it was for some pigments in the past.
Most often, it's about the costs now, some mixes are just cheaper to get a hue very close to a single pigment. In the plastics or car paint industry, there's no use for pigment qualities that we love in watercolors. Mixes will just be as good there.
When it comes to these earthy Quinacridones, they're probably being all replaced by iron oxides over time.

Idk really I’m I the only one who finds Atreus infuriating like I like his combat , it’s very smooth and the sonic affect is cool but firstly his missions are so dead like I genuinely despised the jotenheim mission with angreboda like on a first play through its fun and kinda cute but like it’s so boring sometimes like the thing that we travel on the cow creature (I forgot it’s name I’m sorry long day) is so slow and annoying and angroboda’s call is triggering when she sings to get the thing. The thing that genuinely annoys me with his character tho is probably his ego maybe like when he learnt he was a god in the previous game or like when he proposed the plan that he and kratos force sutur to help them . Idk if this is a shared thought but Atreus annoys me sometimes that still wasn’t an excuse for me to not heimdall the game does a very good job of potraying his character.

2023.06.01 17:56 AmethystSunset Dealing with avoidant partners who have fear of intimacy and setting boundaries

My partner has avoidant attachment type. we have had severe DB issues in the past where he withdrew sexually and physically in all ways for 2 consecutive years...then did it again for another year. Then in the following years he did start to work on things. He is self-aware and in therapy and we've actually made great progress while he has been in therapy--but great progress for an avoidant is just simple things like being able to give a compliment or receive one, being able to cuddle sometimes, being able to say how they feel and express feelings sometimes with their partner without totally shutting down due to overwhelm.
Something I've been trying to work on in my relationship with myself is setting boundaries...the thing is it's very difficult for me to set boundaries with my partner because quite ironically, the reason he has a default setting to push me away is because he has a deep subconscious fear of rejection. So when his behavior become toxic (like when he is randomly rude to me--he does this a lot less now but it still happens), I have trouble knowing how to set the boundary that it is not okay to do that. If I actually tell him it's not okay to do that then it triggers something deep inside him (a feeling of being criticized and rejected because he will take it as me telling him he is "bad") and he will withdraw completely from me for days. Of course I don't want that to happen but at the same time, my default reaction is just to let it go when he treats me rudely or glaringly unkindly...and the trouble with that is, even though letting it go makes him feel "safe" because I haven't rejected him for having an emotion (which is scary for him to express in the first place), I am not respecting myself when I literally just let things slide all the time.
Has anyone else with an avoidant partner found a good way to deal with boundary-setting that does not trigger a withdrawal response or silent treatment from their partner? I want for my relationship to continue being a healing space for both of us and my partner truly is slowly coming out of his shell more and more and I am working on myself too, but I also don't want to just keep sweeping it under the rug every time he treats me poorly whenever he is having anxiety or feeling overwhelmed...I know that doing so is a disservice to me and is also not helping him to be able to find a different way to communicate with me when he is feeling emotionally freaked out.
(For context, the other day my partner and I had a great day together--we often make each other laugh and we are flirty and playful with each other on the regular nowadays even though physical touch is usually brief and sex is still not easy for him due to the intimacy aspect...but yeah, in the evening I told my partner that our daughter told me she had a great time playing with him earlier that night and then I said "You are such a great father!" (and he really is--he doesn't let his issues affect how he bonds with the kids because he doesn't want them to grow up and have the same problems he has)--but right after I said that he said "Yeah, right" sarcastically, and then when I said "You really are", he then said "Fuck off with that stuff." He didn't yell it at me, he just spoke it calmly but it still cuts like a knife on the (nowadays thankfully rare) occasions when he comes out of nowhere at me with a very rude knee-jerk reaction...I get that receiving compliments is still hard for him but it is one of his love languages and he knows he needs them and does not need to be so rude when he gets triggered by one. I just made a funny comment about something on tv right afterward to lighten the mood and he went back to being warm and friendly with me. He should have apologized to me though for saying that or tried harder not to do say "fuck off" when I touched a nerve by showing him some love. What do you guys think might be the best way to address a boundary being crossed by an avoidant that will get the point across and still won't send them into flight mode/major withdrawal mode? Any ideas?

Be easy on me. Tank care has always been fairly intuitive for me, but this one got out of hand.
Both tanks are infected. I was hoping I could balance the tanks back in favor of macros and outcompete the dinos, but it’s not going to happen naturally. The red macro tank is “winning”, but just barely. Chaetogro and iron are helping.
Assuming yes, dinos, my plan right now is to run UV for water column, and try to feed up the macros with chaetogro and ferrion (iron) and over feed fish a bit for a nutrient boost. ID confirmation and/or thoughts?

I’ve been dating someone for 2 months. I’m 31 hes 32 and we have known each other since we were 14 years old. During Covid I went through my dads storage unit and printed copies of every pic I could find, made binders by years, and I also have them backed up on my computer. But I don’t print all of them. For example December 22 might have had 50 photos I’ll keep on my computer but I’ll only print 20. Anyway, my bf and I are both divorced so we can relate on those feelings because his is somewhat fresh. I filed in jan 2021 and it just got finalized in feb 2023. My question is is it weird to keep the photos of me and my ex? And even ex boyfriends? The whole point of my albums (on my computer, I have none printed of my exs) was to have a way to look back at that year of my life, good or bad. But I’m not sure if that comes off as me missing him or I can’t let go. Thanks in advance.

the team here made a decision to stop the video being posted to prevent prejudice of the case, since then threads have popped up including a poorly written "news" article which has only led to further speculation, what this has done is generated unnessary claims towards certain communities and generated conspiracy theories of those involved
what is clear is
  1. we do not know if the taxi driver is a loyalist or who he chooses to give his vote
  2. there is no confirmation if the weapon used was real
  3. there is no confirmation if the video is even real
  4. noone has come forward and most of the "information" is coming from rumours in whatsapp, which is ironic
  5. just like the noah donohoe case, social media including here has spread minsinfomration harming those involved and created a hate mob
  6. no one is aware of the location of this supposed crime outside of a loose connection to a notorious taxi firm
  7. reddit has a horrible history of investigating crimes and causing more harm than good
  8. a lot of the discussion is coming from users heavily involved in sectarianism on a daily basis
more needs to be done to stop misinformation spreading and protect those involved as to ensure justice is maintained
also those involved here should be made aware that their prejudicial remarks could be seen as contempt of court in any possible court case
finally it is the job of the police and relevant authorities to investigate this matter, not a bunch of redditors with their 10 second hot take, the psni will carry out a comprehensive investigation and make recommendations to the pps to action, until that has happened and a court case has decided on the facts, its time people stopped spreading theories and stuck to the facts

BC cutter not cutting correctly
Can someone let me know what settings and measurements your cutter is at? I'm trying to avoid dealing with calling it in and having my machine out of service, but I'm having to print/cut an extra half of the order if not more to get the correct total of cards. The two sets on the tight are (mostly) correct. But the ones that are messing up are cutting at .5in or cutting into the text and hardly any of the screwed up ones are actually cut the same. If it's something I can't fix from the settings then I'll call but I'd rather try without an hour long phone call and techs that take days to come out 🙄

2023.06.01 17:51 ricky--lafleur Thoughts on the exclusion of Assyria and Babylonia from TW Pharaoh

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks to me like there won't be any Assyrian or Babylonian factions in TW Pharaoh.
Personally I'm disappointed about this for a couple reasons.
Firstly, one of the things I find most fascinating about the bronze age is the metal alloy bronze. I know it sounds obvious but it's still somewhat of a mystery how enough copper and especially tin were imported into the region to equip such large empires with bronze tools and weapons. There is fairly conclusive evidence that there is not enough tin in eygpt and Anatolia to create the amount of bronze that was present in the region, therefore it must have come from somewhere else. One of the main theories is that a large portion of the tin came from modern day Afghanistan through Mesopotamia into the region. I know that CA wouldn't create a map large enough to include modern day Afghanistan (even thought I think they should), but at least including Mesopotamia with TW empire system trade nodes on the far east amd south of Mesopotamia would have been interesting.
Secondly, the growing middle-Assyrian empire was one of the major pressures on the hittite empire. The Assyrians didn't fully destroy the hitting empire until the neo-Assyrian empire arose in the Iron age, but the middle-assyrian empire was a major competitor and trade partner with the hittite empire during the bronze age.
Thirdly, Babylonia. It's my understanding that this time period would cover the Kassite dynasty in Babylonia. The Kassites were one of the longest lasting Babylonian dynasties. They were a crucial part of the regional trade network, and they had relations with both the hitties and the Eygptians. It would also be great to have the city of Babylon in a TW game, it's one of the most famous cities of history and its never really been represented in a TW game. A massive walled Babylon with a temple of Marduk and dozens of canals and bridges criss-crossing the city would have been awesome.
Lastly, it's a pet peeve of mine when TW games have map edges in regions that historically were not impassable natural obstacles. It really takes away from the historical immersion feeling in my opinion. I know that at some point these decisions need to be made in the development process but I feel that this decision in this case was not the right call. It feels to me like the Zagros Mountains should have been that map edge in this game. Of course historically ancient armies did march throughout the Zagros, but it was a lot more difficult than taking boats and ferries south through the Mesopotamian rivers and canal systems.
Anyways, that's my thoughts on the game as I understand it to be. I'm really curious what others think about the scope of the game. Did CA drop the ball on this, was it the right decision?
