The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to pass a bill to suspend the nation’s debt limit through January 1, 2025, as lawmakers race to prevent a catastrophic default.
The bill will next need to be passed by the Senate before it can be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. In the Senate, any one lawmaker can delay a swift vote and it is not yet clear when a final vote will take place.
The timeframe to pass the bill through Congress is extremely tight and there is little room for error, putting enormous pressure on leadership in both parties.
Lawmakers are racing the clock to avert a first-ever default ahead of June 5, the date the Treasury Department has said it will no longer be able to pay all of the nation’s obligations in full and on time, a scenario that could trigger global economic catastrophe.
The debt limit bill faced backlash from the far right and the far left, but in the end it passed the House by a wide margin with significant bipartisan support.
The final tally for the vote was 314 to 117. There were 149 Republicans and 165 Democrats who voted for the bill and 71 Republicans and 46 Democrats who voted against it.
Suspending the debt limit through 2025 takes the threat of default off table until after the presidential election. In addition to addressing the debt limit, the bill caps non-defense spending, expands work requirements for some food stamp recipients and claws back some Covid-19 relief funds, among other policy provisions.

2023.06.01 18:53 Wasted_Penguinz I don't think I'm able to function long-term in the current capital society and it terrifies me

I don't know how to phrase the title beter, sorry.
When I was 10 I was diagnosed with autism. I've since that day - and before - I've masked, but even when masking it feels like I've never fit into social society. I've always been the outsider and unfortunately, due to not having many friends in the past and being relentlessly bullied, isolated, alone (even from family) and being friends with whoever decided to be friends with me even if they had bad intentions, I have PTSD alongside other pretty bad issues, which is, well, "fun".
But in the past recent year it just feels like I can't - and won't - ever even fit into the capital society and I'm absolutely terrified. I can handle being a social reject but I'm terrified of being seen as a leech or burden and I'm terrified of just living a life of existing forever.
I'm working at a white collar job, and I got burnt out pretty severely. Long story short, it was due to a very passive-aggressive micromanaging manager that didn't take "no" as an answer. I've been trying to find a new job but every time I start looking again the anxiety creeps up on me, and I have livid nightmares of not being productive enough and getting fired from the new job. Or I just don't get a job, like now: I'm almost 100 applications in with only 1 proper interview which I didn't pass in the third round.
I don't have enough money to buy a place - or even rent a new place place - despite my own rental contract ending soon and earing "median income" here. I've been saving up as much as I can each month to no avail. I'm already just existing: I don't live a lavish lifestyle, I don't care for luxury; all I want is to not be homeless again and be able to replace the broken things and feel at ease over my finances, but with each passing day the possibility of homelessness seems increasingly more likely with buying a house being impossible and rent starting at "sell a kidney" cost.
If I could, I would just quit my job at the spot and start working part-time at an animal shelter, animal farm or animal café. I would just start painting dioramas and other cool figurines or make cosplay accessories for people. But none of these pays, and my work drains my energy to 10% by the end of each day, so I'm stuck existing a miserable exisetence where I'm already dreading tomorrow.
I don't know. I've started going to a psychologist and while they're helpful, but it's not going to change the fact that it feels I'm drowning and I can't keep myself afloat anymore and I'm terrified it'll be like this forever. It just feels so pointless and I feel really, really stuck and helpless.

I was camping for 5 days. Extremely exhausted and needed a break. My requirements for a place was literally a shower, clean and wifi. The city is essentially sold out due to two conferences. I book this dingy airbnb out of desperation.
Immediately after booking the host says the wifi is out, but they "may be able to get it from the neighbors". I was coming out of the woods and hitching to town so I didn't have much option but to see how it went.
I get there and its a literal slum. Huge cobwebs hanging from fans. Floor is full of sand and dust. The washers knobs are broken and they are using a tape stick to operate it. The dryer is blowing exhaust into the house. There are no wash cloths. The tv is disconnected. The included "breakfast" was going to be an old frozen loaf of bread. I go to sit on the bed and it caves in. The host can't figure out how to give me a refund. I'm furiously trying to find a new place.
There is no quality control. Its honestly insane. I got my money back but not before they tried to charge me for 30% of the stay.

My landlord banks with Wells Fargo, the only method of payment he accepts is by bank deposit. So, once a month, I have to buy money orders, drive to Wells Fargo and pull into the drive thru to deposit rent. For the last 5 years this is how I've done things. For the last 6 months or so, 9 times out of 10, the drive thru lanes are closed, and I'll have to wait in a line of 20+ people for 30 minutes to make a deposit that used to take me 5-10 mins at the drive thru. The employees inside have no explanation for me and can't even tell me when the drive thru hours are. What is going on?

Hi! I’m not a full-time nanny but I’m 24 and I’ve been babysitting for about 8 years. I’ve been sitting for one family for 7 years. They are both doctors, and they had 3 kids when we met. They offered me $20/hour in like 2016 when I started. I went off to college and would sit for them over breaks, still for $20/hour. Right before the pandemic, they had another baby. I started sitting for them again last summer, and it had been so long since I worked with kids that I missed it and said $20 was fine. Dumb, I know. I didn’t realize how big of a hassle it would be, since I live a lot farther away from them now and have to stay with my parents to sit for them, who also moved from my hometown and live 30 min from the family now. I’m also more educated now, since I got my bachelor’s and am one course away from my master’s.

My friend group (5 couples in their 30s, each with 1-2 kids under the age of 3 + a few single folks) like to go on group vacations. We typically rent a large house and are all in support of cooking at home, rather than going out. Splitting the cost of the house is fine; no advice needed on that front.
My question is about how to equitably split the groceries/necessities. Things we have tried:

2023.06.01 18:52 lovin193 How do you feel about customers doing all the setup so you just come by and install the equipment?

A bit of background, I'm experienced in construction, mechanics, and some electrical. I've been remodeling my house for the past 5 years and it's time central air. The house is only 925 sq/ft I'm not remodeling a mansion or anything.
I had a new furnace installed about 2 years ago. I did all the duct work and ran the wiring for it. The HVAC company said my work was correct and all they had to do was bring the furnace to hook up the gas and wire everything in.
I'd like to do the same for ac, partially because of budgeting and trying to keep it low cost. I can't use the same HVAC company because it's owned by my now ex's uncle so that's a burned bridge.
So if I do the same for ac which would pretty much be running the electric, would another HVAC company think I'm some kind of schmuck and nitpick everything or have issues using my setup?

This is a weird one – basically some creases / cracks have appeared in my ceiling. They appear across the entire flat, across rooms. They’re evenly spaced. What’s weird though, is as they appeared, I’ve noticed that I can hear a lot more impact noise from the flat above.
I got the surveyor from the housing management association out – he said that it’s nothing to worry about and is just cosmetic, and is caused by the concrete slabs that make up the ceiling/floor between the flats have “settled” or shifted slightly, and it’s perfectly normal.
I might be paranoid, but I’m convinced that this is the cause of me being able to hear more impact noise from upstairs (perhaps this “shifting” of the concrete structure means that the floors are no longer “decoupled” and noise is now more able to transmit down).
Therefore, I want to make a claim on the building insurance for them to look at the problem properly.
However, my concern is: will I have to disclose to a potential buyer in the future when I did this? I can’t imagine it looking good to a buyer that I had concerns of the ceiling shifting and an increase in noise from above, especially when it’s very unlikely that the buildings insurance people will actually be able to fix the issue…
Any advice would be appreciated

I really want to live in a few different places and eventually buy a house but I just don’t ever picture myself staying somewhere, maybe that will change as I get older. Also really unsure about wanting to have kids. Immoscout Premium -> this is your go to place. Get the premium subscription (or check one of the automated bots out there) and apply immediately when a listing is added. Listings usually last 15-30 minutes before they are taken down as way too many people apply.

We had to pay 3 times the cold rent as a deposit ~ 4k euro.The place is a newly renovated attic apartment. In the contract it says its neubau, but the building is from the early 20th century. We are the first residents after the apartment's renovation.Supermarkets in walking distance, but any type of U or S -banhs are 10-20 minutes away.

Some things we encountered that are not confirmed/openly disclosed:- SOMETIMES Even if your documents and income are the same as everybody else applying, there is a discrimination that goes like Western EU -> Eastern EU -> everybody outside EU.
- You must be able to cover 3 times the cold rent, but SOMETIMES if you're total household income is way more than 30% of the price for the apartment, the company will likely reject you.
e.g. total income 5k and you try to apply for an apartment that is 1k. This way they funnel you towards more expensive apartments, even though there is almost nothing worth the higher price. You'll just be overpaying.
---The choice to sign up was made due to necessity, not that we fell in love with the place. The price feels extremely high especially compared toNeighbors who are in a real neubau , signed up last year and pay 1.4k WARM.Neighbors in altbau, signed in 5 years ago that pay 600 WARM.
Every time i speak with anyone i feel I'm getting royally ripped off. Does anyone share similar fate ?

Am I using my hot water correctly?
Moved into my new house and I am so stumped at how my entire central heating system works.
I have an intergas compact HRE 24ov boiler powered by a non mains LPG tank.
This button (pic 2) on the kitchen wall (boiler is in different room) seems to start the central heating, but even if this is off the nest thermostat on the wall will start the central heating too, and if the nest is off pushing this button also brings on the central heating and sets the heating to manual. What does the button actually do? There are no identifying features on it for me to google.
The hot water is BOILING. At the moment I have the nest set to come on between 2-4am but I can't for the life of me change any water settings on the boiler apart from radiator temp.
Can someone help with a. If I am heating the hot water correctly via the nest thermostat and b. How to work the boiler properly itself so the water isn't scalding.
