2023.06.01 17:06 hnqn1611 How To Deal With Social Anxiety and Socially Awkward Situations

How To Deal With Social Anxiety and Socially Awkward Situations
https://preview.redd.it/hrgmiup19f3b1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef784b468013509b3230fd0ff5e20a50de7d2c8c
How to Deal With Socially Awkward Situations (Social Anxiety Tips)
Do you have a fear of judgment, fear of crowds, or fear of saying the wrong thing? Perhaps they all make you run the other way. Fear is one thing that can keep you away from situations... Specifically situations where you have to interact with others. While in the short term, avoiding certain situations can relieve your fear, it will only reinforce your social anxiety in the long term. Cause you’re not doing anything about it! But I have some good news for you! There are ways you can cope with socially awkward situations. Alright. Let’s check them out!
Number 1 - Being Taken Advantage of People with social anxiety often lack assertiveness. They’re afraid of upsetting others or being judged negatively. However, being more assertive can help a lot. It’s a skill that can improve relationships. It lets others know what you need and what you expect. Practice being assertive by stating your needs in a calm way and listening to others' needs as well. This way, you can reach a compromise.
Number 2 - Blushing In Front of Everyone Blushing is a common symptom of social anxiety. Whenever you’re singled out or made the center of attention, you probably find that your face flushes red, and you know just how shitty this can be. While you may never completely stop blushing, there is something that might help. Try monitoring your thoughts about the situation. Say things to yourself like, "People are probably not noticing as much as I think they are."
Number 3 - Panicking if Asked on a Date Dating can be difficult as is. But it’s much worse when you have social anxiety. You panic just thinking about it! A first date takes the stress of talking to someone, and ramps it up with additional pressure and romantic scrutiny. It's a good kind of stress, though, at least if your date goes well. If you suffer from social anxiety, it's best to choose an activity that either gives you something to talk about, or doesn’t require you to talk the whole time. Also, try not to sweat it, even if things get uncomfortable. We've all recovered from embarrassing early dating mistakes.
Number 4 - Standing Alone at a Party Most likely, you don’t even want to go to the party, but your friend coerces you to go. Once you get there, your friend goes off chatting with people, and you find yourself alone. You need to do something, and at this point, small talk will be the key. Making small talk is usually easier if you plan what to say in advance. If you don’t know someone, try topics like weather, news, sports, or you can mention something about the party. But try to keep it positive. If you know the person well, you can mention something that connects the two of you, be it from the past or present. But again, try to keep it somewhat positive. In any case, if you find yourself alone at a party or gathering, look for someone who also seems to be lacking company. Offer an opener such as "Quite the weather we’re having, don't you think?" Now, this doesn’t sound too original or exciting, but it will be enough to start a conversation.
Number 5 - Talking About Taboo Subjects People get uncomfortable talking to each other about all sorts of things - money, religion, politics, and so on. Even more so if you have social anxiety. However, there's a lot we can learn from other perspectives on all topics. The key is to stick to the facts and try to find common ground when discussing controversial subjects.
Number 6 - Not Knowing Any of Your Neighbors Are you afraid to talk to your neighbors? Perhaps you worry that they have negative thoughts about you. But unless you gave them reason to, this is probably not the case. They don’t even know you! Simply offer a smile or say hello. You can also offer to help. For example, offer to help with groceries or hold the door for them. It’s really that easy.
Number 7 - Having to Use a Public Washroom You may be very uncomfortable using a public washroom and you find yourself anxious or agitated once you’re in the washroom stall or at the urinal. Sometimes, social anxiety can make it difficult to actually go to the bathroom, as the muscles that control your bowel movements and your ability to urinate can freeze or tighten up. Breathing exercises can help you to feel calm and relaxed, which will then help to loosen up your bladder or bowels and allow you to go. Get in a relaxing head space by putting on headphones and listening to music on your smartphone. You may find it helpful to distract yourself by playing your favorite game on your phone while you let out a big one. This will allow you to focus on the game, rather than your discomfort or embarrassment.
Number 8 - Giving Up on Things Because of Your Social Anxiety You might be contemplating on starting a new venture, but, your social anxiety keeps getting in the way. You give up before you even try! Don't give up on your goals because of social anxiety. It’s still possible to achieve what you want in life. Set goals for yourself and work towards them—either by using self-help books or with the help of someone you trust – like a friend, a relative or a professional.
Number 9 - Spending Holidays Alone Many people with social anxiety feel alone on special days of the year, such as Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and even on their own birthdays. Try making those days feel like any other day of the year. Or, plan something special to do for yourself. Number 10 - When You Feel Misunderstood People with social anxiety are often misunderstood by others. You may be asked why you’re so "quiet" or why you don't speak up more. It’s best to think in advance about how you will respond to this situation the next time it happens.
This way you won’t be caught off guard and have nothing to say in reply. You can respond with something like: "I get that a lot. Actually, once you get to know me I can be quite talkative." Social anxiety can take over your life. It can control everything you do or don’t do. You probably don’t want to live your entire life this way, so you should consider breaking free from this rut. To get started, do something that is totally out of your comfort zone. Try signing up for a class or an activity that requires you to be around people. The only way you can really conquer a fear is to face it.

2023.06.01 17:05 AshPho3nixAng3l Join the marines now or…just go for college and see till then..

I’m 19 and I’m doing this gap year overseas. I applied and got accepted to my comfy choice college back in my home state in the US. We paid the in-state tuition for Fall 2023 but it’s so fucking expensive. As an international student who is also American you may think that I have plenty of scholarships and grants to help me pay this but I’m struggling. My dad he isn’t rlly patient so I doubt he is gonna wait till I get these stupid scholarship acceptance letters.
My personal thoughts on college. Not excited tbh just signing up for ‘pre-requisite’ classes that will waste my time. So leaning on more on following dad’s path by getting ready for the ASVAB and boot camp than college considering the benefits of the Marine branch and the jobs opportunities it will give me in the future.
Throwing this out there to look for anyone’s opinions.

2023.06.01 16:54 Previous-Fun-4152 How I hit Master Rank on just my 4th day playing!

How I hit Master Rank on just my 4th day playing!
Games played = 146 Win Rate = 60.2%
To start I feel I should let you guys know I came into this game with years of moba experience mainly with league of legends. Ive hit master rank in LoL PC and grand master on LoL wild rift a few years ago.
Downloaded and started playing the game three days ago. Got hooked immediately. I have an addictive personality so l've been going pretty hard and will be taking a break for a few days now lol.
Played all my games solo but it was still a really enjoyable experience most of the time.
Surprisingly though I found the quality of games got worse the higher I climbed. A lot more trolls/ego's causing pointless chaos.
Now for the tips I have for other new players trying to climb ranked
The biggest tip I have is to 1 trick
I suggest sticking to one character as often as possible. Ideally a high tier character AND one you enjoy.
I’ve always loved Charizard and he’s one of the better characters but is by no means S tier. So don’t worry too much about tier lists. But definitely try not to pick a character with a poor win rate unless they have a high skill ceiling.
Besides that it really is just the classic moba rules
  • learn matchups/counter-play
  • don’t tilt - be consistent
  • be locked in early
  • always ask yourself what you could do better game to game
  • play easy meta characters when your mechanics are off
  • only fill in holes if your team roles are severely under balanced
  • never give up
  • watch mini map constantly
  • always be on time for team fights/obj’s
  • don’t greed
  • identify high priority targets/carrys for both teams game to game
  • almost always fight when you have number advantage
  • steal enemy jungle camps and deny xp
The only other huge tip I have is to learn how to last hit. Especially Rayquaza. ALWAYS TRY TO STEAL RAYQUAZA. You can win many games you have no business winning.
ALSO sometimes the best offense is a good defense! If you’re up 5 circle things to 3. You don’t have to risk dying trying to score. Just keep farming experience and extend your xp lead while defending your zones. Keep defending and farming until obj team fight time. Make sure to have your unite move in those moments.

2023.06.01 16:51 AntonioS3 Main Story Chapter 11 Summary: Grand Sea Return

Previous chapter: https://www.reddit.com/TowerofFantasy/comments/129hnmx/main_story_summary_chapter_10_grand_sea_pursuit/
In this chapter, the Wanderer and Nemesis return to Mirroria to rest for tomorrow's meeting with Archon Larsen. Nemesis comments that she still cares about the Angels of Clemency, and the MC replies that she will be fine though comments on her confidence.
Later, after the meeting which didn't have much besides Lan and Archon Larsen telling each other what they knew about the entities, MC and Nemesis goes to the security room and catch up a bit with Ruby as well. Lin talks to Rubilia privately; she has finally obtained a device that would interfere with the Hive Mother's ability to see through her eyes, though Lyra needs to test the effects by being near Ruby, who is a Grayspace entity. Rubilia is still determined to go to the Confounding Abyss and find answers there, meanwhile Ruby has kept her promises made toward Lin, in fact she even exclaims that if she grew up then she would be able to do missions with her as well.
Lin gets a call from Fiona, the abyss current has gotten less stable and they need to figure out a plan. So they go to Innars after saying bye to Ruby. At Innars, from Fiona's words, the Mooke Squad says that the entities has become active recently. Lan is worried that the areas can become abyss current at any time due to distortions in timespace. Rubilia wonders if the timestamp from the Nine Realms is related to the black stone due to the similar materials, which can be found in the Abyss, though 9R people refer to it as the black jade, a byproduct of another civilization.
Rubilia guesses that the Abyssant can exert influence on the spacetime barrier, though suspects that the spacetime in underwater was always unstable, and thus suggests to create a cause or effect by bringing the energy with her Grayspace abilities.
At there, she can feel the surge of energy inside the current, and the Hive Mother calling out to its offspring to rescue it. Therefore, the other Executors go to protect her as she works her energy through the current, after a few minutes of combat, Rubilia manages to turn the abyss current into a kind of portal. They return to Breezy Isle to hear from Ms. Lyra, who says that it is a result of the manipulation of spacetime. Lan proposes to use the timestamp which allows them to unlock the entrance to the ruins, though after entering they seem to lose contact with Lyra, with their devices malfunctioning.
The device seems to react to Lan's timestamp which means they are connected, and she mentions that there is the same device in Nine Realms. Afterward, they see a mirror, but it doesn't seem to imitate their actions... rather,, due to the distortions in the timespace, the mirrors are showing the events of a few minutes later, as well as the events that happened a few seconds ago. After activating a few mechanisms, the statue in the middle opens up along with totems; it looks to be part of an alien civilization, but they don't know what one, regardless Rubilia suggests that they can use what was left behind.
Another totem later, Lin suggests that the totems could actually be recording the development of the Mirroria and Vera people, in which case they will need to prepare for that day. The next totem seems to have the implication of the development and evolutions of the Grayspace entities in line with their knowledge. But Lan comments that she has seen the pattern before, interpreting it as suppression or sealing, Rubilia thinks the totems might either have functions or are just summaries. (The MC complains that they want a simpler explaination...)
However, after opening the last puzzle, the puzzles suddenly come in place, and they are transported back outside. Unexpectedly, Hanlu has news regarding the development of the spacetime fluctations and Lyra comments that it is improving steadily. At the zone, Hanlu says there was a kind of neutralization of the energy, making it possible to close the current with the timestamp or even transform it into a celestial gate to their needs, though Lan thinks it is risky. But she waves farewell for now as he goes to investigate it, while the group return to report their findings to Larsen.
Later, Lin takes Ruby to Innars to let her come along and see the exhibition of the fishes, though Gunonno seems to trouble Fiona, since the physical girl doesn't really get to play with others due to parents not allowing children to play with her. Lin decides to try something different, asking Ruby for a plan. Ruby decides to ask Gunonno to come down, and the latter does, thinking the flame girl wants to come on adventures with her. She explains about the shark, about its characteristics, about being gulped down and exploring its stomach (Uh, slow down, Gunonno...) Lin does seem glad that Ruby is making friends, though she will have to explain the truth to her in a future time.
Seeing how the two children are bonding, Fiona wants Ruby to come over more often, though Lin hopes she doesn't get sick of her too quickly. Shirli likes the tour too, and Li nshows gratitude to MC and Shirli for the help with grayspace entities. After taking a photo shoot, they say bye to Fiona, and Lin takes back Ruby to Mirroria, hoping for good news from Hanlu regarding Nine Realms.
And thus, this concludes the Vera arc. In the next chapter, the group will connect into the Nine Realm arc. If you have any new theories or lore about this one, feel free to share.

2023.06.01 16:49 ThatOnePilotDude EE Unisex Bathroom

As a bored flight major, I have only heard the stories about the EE Unisex Bathroom. I am rarely on main campus and when I am it is never in the engineering side. Because of this I had Chat GPT write a little story. I hope you enjoy.

Once upon a time, in the bustling world of technology and innovation, there was a young engineering student named Alex. Alex was a determined individual with a passion for electrical engineering, and their dreams led them to the prestigious Purdue University.
One sunny morning, as the semester was in full swing, Alex found themselves deep in their studies. Hours had passed since they last left their study desk, and nature's call became impossible to ignore. The corridors of the Electrical Engineering building were filled with the murmurs of fellow students, all engrossed in their own academic pursuits.
Alex, with determination in their eyes, set off on a quest for relief. Whispers and rumors had circled among the students about a legendary restroom that was said to hold the title of "Purdue EE Unisex bathroom." Some claimed it was a serene oasis, while others insisted it possessed magical powers that could enhance one's engineering skills.
Guided by their curiosity, Alex embarked on a mission to find this mythical facility. They ventured through the maze-like hallways, searching for clues to uncover its hidden location. The walls were adorned with posters and diagrams of complex circuits, providing a reminder of the academic pursuits within the building.
With each step, Alex's anticipation grew, fueled by stories passed down from upperclassmen. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of wandering, they stumbled upon an inconspicuous door. It bore no distinguishing marks, leaving them uncertain whether it held the secrets they sought.
Summoning their courage, Alex pushed open the door, and to their amazement, they entered a realm like no other. The Purdue EE Unisex bathroom was a sight to behold, an engineering marvel in its own right. The room was bathed in warm, fluorescent light, illuminating sleek metallic fixtures and pristine white tiles. It was a sanctuary of tranquility amidst the chaotic world outside.
Alex marveled at the ingenious design of the bathroom. It seemed as though every detail had been meticulously crafted with engineering precision. The sinks featured motion-sensor faucets, conserving water with each use. The hand dryers were equipped with advanced airflow technology, swiftly drying hands with minimal energy consumption. Every element of this sanctuary embodied efficiency and elegance.
Word of their discovery had spread like wildfire throughout the engineering community. Students from various disciplines flocked to the Purdue EE Unisex bathroom, seeking solace and inspiration. It became a gathering place, where ideas were exchanged, and connections were forged.
As the semesters passed, Alex's journey to the Purdue EE Unisex bathroom became a rite of passage for each new generation of engineering students. The legendary oasis became a symbol of their shared experiences and the pursuit of knowledge.
Years later, when Alex stood on the stage, adorned in their graduation robe, they reflected on their time at Purdue University. They realized that their journey to the Purdue EE Unisex bathroom was more than just a quest for relief—it had become a metaphor for their personal growth and perseverance. The journey had taught them to seek out hidden gems, to embrace challenges, and to explore beyond the boundaries of their comfort zone.
With fond memories in their heart, Alex stepped forward to receive their degree, ready to embark on new journeys that awaited them in the vast realm of electrical engineering. And as they walked off the stage, a new generation of curious minds whispered tales of the legendary Purdue EE Unisex bathroom, eager to embark on their own adventure and discover the magic that awaited them within its walls.
I am now going to make this journey for myself in the near future and will update when I reach the holy land. o7

2023.06.01 16:42 ThinkBigger01 ECB’s Lagarde Sees No Clear Evidence Core Inflation Has Peaked - Bloomberg News

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-01/ecb-s-lagarde-sees-no-clear-evidence-core-inflation-has-peaked
For those who don't have access to full articles on Bloomberg, here are the key points:
It’s not yet apparent that core inflation has peaked in the euro zone, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said, pledging further increases in borrowing costs (meaning more hikes).
“There is no clear evidence that underlying inflation has peaked,” Lagarde said Thursday in a speech in Hanover, Germany. “We have made clear that we still have ground to cover to bring interest rates to sufficiently restrictive levels.”
While headline came down last month, core price pressures, however, moderated by less, meaning more tightening is needed to ensure the 2% inflation target is reached.
Speaking Wednesday, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos warmed that he “could not say that the victory is there so far.” Fellow rate-setter Madis Muller said more than one additional quarter-point rate move is likely.
Hope this helps. Stay informed.

2023.06.01 16:35 NoMursey Drip vs Mushroom bubblers for trees?

I’m installing a DIY irrigation system in Arizona covering a 1 acre lot. The mainlines and laterals are 1” PVC. I will have 3 zones. 1 for large trees, 1 for shrubs, 1 for a spare (possibly cactus). Goal for the zones is to group by watering frequency. For the large trees I was originally planning on a riser to mushroom bubblers for a higher volume/less frequent watering. But I’ve been thinking if I should do a riser to full flow manifolds with drip emitters so I can place the emmiters equally around the tree well. Is there a preference in this community for bubblers vs drip manifolds coming from the riser? I think both would get the job done, just curious if there is a preferred method.

Hello!! I’m Mina. I’m currently looking for a partner. I adore horror and dark romance themes, so I would like someone with similar interests!
About me:
I’m 23, so I’m looking for partners who are around my age. No minors please!
I also write exclusively in 3rd person, so I would prefer people who also do the same. I really don’t like “i” or “you”, so we might not be compatible if you use these POVs for writing!
I only write female characters, sorry!! I am okay with writing all genders of side characters though! I would like my partner to write a male or masculine aligned character.
My writing length varies, but you’ll always get around 2-3 paras from me, so I would like a similar response length. I love romance, SoL, adventure/action, fantasy themes. I also write on discord!
Themes and Plots:
Themes I love: Horror, unstable romance, power dynamics, stockholm syndrome, eldritch entities, yakuza, gods and goddesses, monsters, one-sided love, love triangles, hanahaki-like themes, yandere, opposites attract, otome games, etc.
Plot ideas, with my character being A and yours B:
Some other things I would love to write are: Good Girl (A) x Bad Guy (B), Fan (A) x Idol/Celebrity/Band Member, Civilian/Innocent (A) x Mafia (B), Priestess (A) x Demon (B), Angel (A) x Demon (B)
Fandom Prompts/What I’m currently into:
I also am up for other fandoms! I know a bit but not a lot, my era is really 2010’s anime and magical girl shows!
If you’ve made it this far, please tell me your age, which plot you liked most, and what your favorite color is! If you have plots of your own that kinda vibe with mine as well, i’d love to hear them!

2023.06.01 16:33 Echopine After almost a decade, I finally cured my sleep-disordered breathing.

Sorry this is SUPER SUPER long, I need to write this out as a form of cathartic release and don't necessarily expect anyone to read it. I originally posted this in the UARS sub but my experience might help someone here too. There's a TLDR at the end which says what I did to fix it.
It's been a long and miserable ride but I'm writing this to let anyone who is suffering know that it can get better. It takes a buttload of perseverance which is difficult when you're chronically exhausted but there isn't really much of a choice for any of us in that regard is there? I'm now 27 and I'm bitter and angry at how this shit ruined my life but I made it through so w/e. Just to preface, I'm well aware what worked for me won't work for most. This is more about providing closure for myself than anything. I'd also like to state this experience has entirely changed my opinion of doctors. Hear what they have to say and work with them, but you need to learn everything you can to help yourself and absolutely challenge them on anything they say that doesn't feel right/you don't understand. If they react with patronizing hostility, then find someone else. Listen to what your body is telling you and recognise that your intuition is valid and important. Sure, you'll get it wrong a lot but you get better at figuring out what works the longer you work at it.
So this is what happened to me:
Just after I graduated uni I started feeling extremely tired all the time, no matter how much sleep I got. It's a special kind of tired I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with. One that feels like you've been drinking heavily after running a marathon. Weeks/months pass and that exhaustion compounds. The first two years were terrifying and I had fully accepted my life was over. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong with me and I was accused many, many times of lying or that I was just severely depressed. I was severely depressed but it was because chronic sleep deprivation is a mental prison. I went down the psychiatry route though and was on literally everything at one point or another, from Seroquel which left me drooling in a chair for a week to brintellix, which I equate to panic attacks in pill form. I also got a healthy xanax addiction from my psych who said there was no withdrawal. The fact he had a picture of Kurt Cobain on his desk should have been a red flag I guess. Granted, mirtazapine allowed me to keep my head above water but I got super fat, and only now that I've recently come off I realized it affected my cognitive ability greatly. I knew, even then, the root cause of my depression was sleep deprivation and I think it's important to note for anyone going through this now that no amount of antidepressant (even if it 'helps you sleep') is going to fix sleep-disordered breathing. This type of medication has its place and I'm not discouraging anyone from trying it but the previous point is important.
After barking up the wrong tree many times (psychiatrists, endocrinologists, neurologists, etc). I finally found an ENT surgeon. This was about 4 years in and by that point, I had little faith they'd be able to do anything. After an at-home sleep study and examination, the surgeon was extremely confident it was UARS. So for the first time in years, I had a glimmer of hope and booked myself in for a very expensive septoplasty, adenoid removal, and turbinate reduction op. At the same time, he referred me to an orthodontist who made a mandibular device to keep my airway open at night (also very expensive). Fast forward a month and I'm all healed but I still feel terrible. The mandibular device was worthless as well (in my case). The surgeon hands me a card for a counselor. Great.
So then I move on to CPAP as I now know through the sleep study I did I'm waking up multiple times a night due to increased respiratory effort. After a lot of trial and error, I'd say it brought me from feeling like shit to feeling meh most days. Meh was an incredible improvement, however, and I was very grateful. I lived like this for a long time. Things were good enough for me to work but only in the most basic roles. Pretty soul-crushing really considering I aced school in the hopes of becoming a marine biologist.
Last year I read somewhere that taking antihistamines (claritin) right before bed helped their UARS. The source was sketchy AF and I didn't really put much stock in it but I was willing to give anything a fair chance. And it worked. Uninterrupted, beautiful sleep for a few months. It really is quite incredible just how different I am as a person when I'm well-rested. Literally every aspect of my well-being improved. I was happy but also horrified at how long I'd lived in the braindead state UARS creates. 7 years is a long time to feel that way and it's left its mark.
The antihistamines of course stopped working. I tried many different types but none of them worked as well as Claritin did. This did however provide a key piece of information that would ultimately be the last piece of the puzzle. If I reacted so well to taking antihistamines before bed then allergies had a role to play in my breathing at night. Allergies to what though? I wasn't sneezing and I didn't have itchy eyes. Turns out a dust mite allergy doesn't present that way in everyone. I've lived with my grandparents (not because I want to believe me) almost all the way through this and the carpets haven't been changed in 30 years. I've also noticed my sleep would weirdly improve if I stayed in other places. I sleep pretty deeply in hotels for example. I was in a rainforest in Malaysia for a few days a while back and forgot my CPAP and slept phenomenally. Whether that means I truly have UARS or not I'm not sure. I still sleep with it as I haven't been able to recreate that anywhere else. What it does say is that it is subtle rhinitis brought on by a dust mite allergy that triggers my SDB and creates UARS-like symptoms. I'm now having the carpets replaced with hardwood floors, using mattress/pillow covers, and using Flonase every night. Breathe Right strips have also been an absolute game changer in conjunction with CPAP. Using them in concert has made me realize just how limited my nasal breathing really is, even after surgery. If you haven't tried it yet, I recommend giving it a shot. While I'm waiting for the floor to be replaced, I have the air intake of my CPAP placed directly by an open window which also has been working great. That's only a solution for summer though really.
And that's it. I sleep well almost every night now. The relief I feel both physically and mentally is immense but as I've said, this destroyed my life and fundamentally changed me as a person. I'd like to try and see the silver lining but it's given me so much baggage I don't really know where to start. I go to bed scared it'll come back every single night. Even the slightest hint of tiredness makes me paranoid. That's what therapy is for I guess. If you're reading this, I hope it helps you in some way. Shit sucks and I hope you find relief quicker than I did.
TLDR: FUCK UARS and I'm sorry for anyone who is dealing with sleep-disordered breathing. I'm cured and it was a combination of septoplasty, adenoid removal, turbinate reduction, CPAP, and finally an awareness of my dust mite allergy and the relentless use of breathe right strips and flonase.
